GTA 6 is almost here, and players will soon be able to download Rockstar Games’ massive open-world game ahead of its November 19 release. It’s been more than a decade since GTA 5 launched, and the wait for its successor has been considerably longer than anyone expected. However, with the release now just over two weeks away, attention is turning toward the final preparations before launch. That includes making enough room on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, especially considering how large GTA 6‘s file size is expected to be.

The download size of GTA 6 has been a major talking point in recent weeks, with reports suggesting that the standard edition could require approximately 210 GB of storage on PS5. For comparison, GTA 5 currently occupies roughly 87 GB to 104 GB, while Red Dead Redemption 2 requires around 111 GB to 116 GB. Of course, these figures don’t necessarily mean GTA 6 is twice as big as its predecessors, although Rockstar says as much and claims that Leonida is its largest and most detailed open world yet. Fortunately, players won’t have to download everything on launch day.

GTA 6 Release Schedule – November 2026

  • November 5 should be a big reveal for GTA 6 (following the Thursday pattern)
  • November 12 = Pre-Load
  • November 19 = Release!

GTA 6 pre-loading is scheduled to begin on Thursday, November 12, exactly one week before the game releases on November 19. This means players who have digitally pre-ordered the game can download it ahead of time, allowing them to jump straight into the open world map of Vice City once their copy unlocks. Pre-loading doesn’t provide early access by itself, however, as the game will remain locked until its scheduled release time. Having an entire week to download everything should be particularly helpful for players with slower internet connections.

Find the odd one out before the timer hits zero.

GTA 6 players on Xbox Series X|S can use the popular New Zealand trick to start playing early. This method involves changing an Xbox console’s location to New Zealand, where November 19 arrives several hours before it does in the United States. Because GTA 6 uses regional midnight unlocks, American players could potentially begin playing on November 18 instead. The process has worked with numerous Xbox releases over the years, although Rockstar hasn’t confirmed whether it will work with GTA 6. It’s also worth noting that changing a PS5’s region isn’t nearly as straightforward, so this is primarily something Xbox players will want to keep an eye on.

The expected 210 GB download is another reason why GTA 6’s November 12 pre-load date is important. The original PS5 has approximately 667 GB of usable internal storage, meaning Rockstar’s latest open-world game could occupy nearly a third of that space. Players with large libraries may need to uninstall other games or move some content to an expansion SSD before downloading GTA 6.

With GTA 6 pre-loading beginning November 12, the final countdown to Rockstar’s next release is underway. Rockstar may provide additional details about launch times and storage requirements in the coming days, but the pre-load date gives players something concrete to prepare for. Considering how long GTA 6 has been in development, waiting for a massive download to finish probably isn’t how most players want to begin their return to Vice City, so they should be sure to pre-load as soon as they can.
