Eagle-eyed viewers have spotted an Easter egg in the Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer that appears to be a callback to GTA: Vice City. The GTA 6 easter egg specifically appears to reference the protagonist of GTA: Vice City, Tommy Vercetti.

With gamers having waited over a decade for GTA 6 at this point, the little that’s been officially shown by Rockstar Games has been pored over by fans. Tiny details have been spotted, with some potentially highlighting apparent changes in gameplay, like noticing that the GTA 6 trailer features female police officers. However, it looks like this Easter egg has gone largely unnoticed this whole time.

Rockstar Games releases a new official Grand Theft Auto 6 screenshot for fans to analyze and debate.

GTA 6 Trailer Quietly References Tommy Vercetti

Unfortunately, the third trailer for GTA 6 still hasn’t been released as of publication time, but that hasn’t stopped fans from studying every frame in the existing trailers for information. With the second trailer having come out over a year ago, some might have thought that everything had been uncovered by now, but it seems there are still some details to be discovered, including a small Easter egg that appears to reference Tommy Vercetti. In one moment of the second GTA 6 trailer, Jason slaps a shopkeeper, which is where the focus of the shot is. However, if one looks at the background, they’ll notice an illustration on the wall of an iguana which appears to be wearing Tommy’s shirt.

The iguana is only visible for a split second, and without brightening the scene, it’s practically invisible. While it’s not possible to study the iguana in full resolution due to the nature of the trailer, a zoomed-in shot does seem to match the blue shirt with white and dark blue fronds on it that Tommy wears. While it’s possible that it’s just a coincidence, Rockstar Games has dropped a lot of Easter egg nods in other games, including plenty of references to older GTA games. GTA 5 has several references to Vice City, ranging from character callbacks to portions of Vice City‘s cover art being painted on walls.

Fans of the franchise have been impressed at this discovery, with many expressing surprise that the detail was spotted at all. However, this isn’t the first time that Tommy and his game seem to have been referenced by Rockstar Games. In a promotional image dating back to the time the second trailer dropped, Jason can be seen wearing a similar shirt while standing across the street from the Ocean View Hotel. It would make sense for the prominent landmark to make a return, but the combination of the two is almost certainly a nod to Tommy, as the hotel was his first safehouse in GTA: Vice City.

With GTA 6 pre-orders opening on June 25 and a planned release in November, it won’t be long before gamers can finally explore the modern version of Vice City for themselves. It will be interesting to see how many more nods to prior games show up in the actual title. However, judging by the secrets still being uncovered in Red Dead Redemption 2 over seven years since its release, chances are GTA 6 players will be making discoveries for many years to come.
