Helldivers 2‘s recent review tally on Steam is currently sitting at Mostly Negative, and the latest wave of negative reviews has also dropped the game’s overall ranking down to Mostly Positive. In an attempt to put the fanbase’s minds at ease, developers Arrowhead put out a post on Steam, Reddit, and Discord to address some recent complaints…which has somehow only managed to upset fans even further.

It’s starting to feel like the only time you hear about Helldivers 2 these days is when players are mad about something. The cynics among you might say that’s true for every game, but it feels different when it comes to Helldivers 2. Perhaps it’s due in part to how dedicated the fans are, because a lot of recent live-service games would kill for the Steam player count numbers that Helldivers 2, a game that released over two years ago, has today.

Whatever the reason, the player base is certainly very passionate about its distaste for some of the game’s recent changes. I haven’t played Helldivers 2 in several months, so I’m just going off the posts I’ve seen on the subreddit, the messages in the Discord, and the negative reviews here, but here’s a non-exhaustive list of issues I’ve seen people complain about.

Weapons keep getting nerfed, devs keep adding Warbonds you have to pay for instead of fixing bugs, performance is getting worse on PC, patch notes don’t list the buffs for the enemies, and—the thing that’s apparently upsetting people the most—Arrowhead apparently isn’t doing a great job of communicating with fans.

Well, they’ve attempted to address that last one at least, but based on the replies to their Q&A post on Reddit…I’m not sure I’d say they did a “great job” of communicating. However, that may have less to do with what they said and more to do with their track record. One of the top comments summed that up in a more erudite way than I could: “How many times have you repeated this shit without actually doing anything?”

Also, I know it’s difficult for professional companies to find the very thin line between being robotic and coming across in a  “How do you do, fellow kids?” sort of way, but the Q&A post does have a certain “CEO on LinkedIn tries to connect with the common man” vibe to it.

That being said, after reading through the complaints on Steam about developer efforts to balance Slay the Spire 2 recently, I am taking a lot of these negative Steam reviews for Helldivers 2 with a grain of salt. Maybe there’s something to the anger, but also…I wouldn’t be surprised if fans are blowing it way out of proportion.
