Hogwarts Legacy’s Most Touching Easter Egg Is Likely to Go Unnoticed

The Harry Potter franchise has certainly had a cultural impact on the world, and that impact only escalated, in one way or another, with the launch of Avalanche Software’s Hogwarts Legacy in 2023. While there have been many Harry Potter games before it, none have given players the opportunity to explore the Wizarding World in the way that Hogwarts Legacy has. With modern visuals, an expansive open world, and a faithful recreation of Hogwarts Castle, players have had the chance of a lifetime to witness firsthand the magical world of Harry Potter being brought to life in a way it never has before.

While exploring Hogwarts Legacy‘s world, fans of the Harry Potter book and film series can find plenty of Easter eggs that pay tribute to the source material, including the Goblet of Fire, Hermione’s Polyjuice Potion, and the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets. Not all of Hogwarts Legacy‘s Easter eggs are as heartwarming as the rest, however, as one has strategically been placed in the game to serve as a tribute to one of Harry Potter‘s most recognizable faces — the legendary actor Robbie Coltrane, who played the beloved half-giant Rubeus Hagrid throughout the Harry Potter film series.

Hogwarts Legacy Includes a Touching Tribute to Robbie Coltrane

Robbie Coltrane was known for many of his roles, which included Dr. Edward “Fitz” Fitzgerald in the crime series Cracker and Valentin Zukovsky in The World Is Not Enough. However, his most notable role was arguably that of Rubeus Hagrid, the Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and one of the most memorable and lovable characters from the Harry Potter film series.

Coltrane passed away in October 2022 due to a number of health complications, and he has been sorely missed ever since by his castmates and fans of the Harry Potter film series. He left an indelible mark on the franchise and has been one of its most recognizable faces. In honor of Coltrane and his role as Rubeus Hagrid, Hogwarts Legacy included a tribute to him that is very easy to miss if players don’t know where to look and what to look for.

Robbie Coltrane’s Tribute Can Be Found Near the Groundskeeper’s Hut in Hogwarts Legacy

As expected, Hogwarts Legacy‘s tribute to Robbie Coltrane, otherwise known as “Hagrid’s Memorial,” can be found near the Groundskeeper’s Hut in Hogwarts Legacy‘s open world. Shortly after they’ve chosen a house, players will be given access to the game’s open world and have an opportunity to visit Hagrid’s Memorial just outside Hogwarts’ South Exit. After leaving Hogwarts via the South Exit, simply traveling southeast along the Black Lake will lead players to the Groundskeeper’s Hut. From there, they only need to move around to the back of the hut to locate the memorial.

The memorial is a gravestone depicting a Hippogriff. While the tribute is often referred to as “Hagrid’s Memorial,” the Hippogriff indicates the gravestone is actually in reference to Buckbeak, Hagrid’s iconic Hippogriff who appeared in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Due to the gravestone being behind the Groundskeeper’s Hut and no quest or spell, not even Revelio, ever drawing players to it, it’s likely to continue to get overlooked unless players happen across news of its presence in the world of Hogwarts Legacy. Nevertheless, the legacy of Robbie Coltrane as Rubeus Hagrid has been cemented in one of the most successful games in recent memory, and rightfully so.
