In Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen there’s a secret technique to stop a Pokemon’s evolution. But for trainers trying to make their partners learn all moves faster, having to smash a button constantly can be a pain. That’s where the Everstone comes into play: A held item introduced in Generation 2 games that prevents Pokemon holding it from evolving.
This fantastic Held Item can also be obtained in Pokemon FR/LG, and in this guide, players will learn how to get it. Considering that there’s only one Everstone in the entire game, having this precious item is a must. However, obtaining it will require a bit of Pokemon Catching.

How to Get Everstone in Pokemon FireRed & GreenLeaf
The first thing players need to do to get the Everstone in Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen is to travel to Vermillion City, to the SS. Anne and obtain the HM 01 – Cut from the captain. Once that HM is in their power, they should teach it to a Pokemon. The Farfetch’d that can be obtained by trading nearby is a good candidate.
Now, head back to Cerulean City and take the exit towards Route 10 (the one in the East). You can check out the exact locations with this Fully Interactive Map of Kanto. Keep heading east until hitting a dead end of the road, then turn south to find a Pokemon Center, and the entrance to the Rock Cavern.
Head inside and look to the right to find one of Professor Oak’s assistants on a small table. Talk to him and he will ask players to show their Pokedex progress, so that they can obtain the Everstone as a reward.

To use the trick to stop Pokemon Evolution, players need to hit B right before the Pokemon starts shining during the evolution animation. Some players also like to use the Smash B button technique to prevent missing the time window.
Players need to have at least 20 Pokemon Species registered in their Pokedex before they can obtain the Stone. A task that won’t be so simple if they are not catching every Pokemon they encounter since Route 1.
But, here are some species that pop up nearby that can help you with Pokedex completion: Meowth (heading out of Cerulean, to the South, near the Daycare), Abra (in the tall grass near the Nugget Bridge), Oddish (FR) or Bellsprout (LG), same zone as Abra.
Remember that you can also evolve Pokemon like Caterpie and Weedle to their final stage by level 10, and that’s 6 entries in the Pokedex. Plus, Nidoran Male & Female can also become 6 entries if players use their Moon Stones on them.
Finally, another piece of advice is to always try to catch Pokemon by weakening them first. Otherwise, players are going to waste Poke Balls and exhaust their funds before they can even complete the requirements for obtaining the Everstone.
The next milestone for a Pokedex completion reward is not so far ahead. Collect 30 Pokemon and trade them in the Gate Building on Route 12 (east of Vermillion) to get an ItemFinder.
