Resident Evil Requiem brought two protagonists into the spotlight this time around. Grace Ashcroft gave players intense, stealth-focused horror, and Leon Kennedy’s long-awaited return brought back the franchise’s fun action gameplay to help break up the tension. Resident Evil is one of my favorite franchises, so my expectations were pretty high. Thankfully, Resident Evil Requiem has become one of my favorite entries in the series.

The game manages to nail a pretty solid balance of horror and action, but the gameplay isn’t the only thing that satisfied me so much. Resident Evil Requiem‘s story is one of the most emotional and well-done in the franchise. The ending feels a bit rushed at points, but the cliffhanger post-credit scenes have me really eager to see where the next Resident Evil game takes players. There are several teases throughout Resident Evil Requiem‘s ending, but one that has ignited some of the most discussion is the shocking revelation that Leon is married. A ring can be seen on his finger after he’s rescued from the ARK, and many longtime Resident Evil fans were quick to assume that his spouse is either Ada Wong or Claire Redfield. These are likely scenarios, but honestly, I don’t know if that’s the best idea.

Resident Evil Requiem Comes Full Circle With The Last of Us

The Last of Us was directly inspired by Resident Evil 4, and Requiem feels like Capcom is returning the favor this time around.

Resident Evil’s Leon Kennedy May Be Better Off Married to Someone Who He Hasn’t Faced So Much Trauma With

Who Leon Kennedy is married to is one of the biggest questions in the Resident Evil fan base right now, and there may be answers down the road. Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi recently shared some insight with Eurogamer, confirming that “The answer will become clear some day, but not just yet.” This is pretty frustrating for fans who have been dying to know, but the reveal may be sooner than expected.

Nakanishi also recently confirmed that a Resident Evil Requiem DLC is now in the works. It’s possible that this expansion could finally lift the veil on who Leon’s spouse is, but only time will tell. Right now, most fans are pretty convinced that it’s Claire or Ada, though. These two make the most sense. Leon and Ada have always had some kind of tension between them, and he and Claire went through the harrowing events of the Raccoon City Outbreak together. All three characters have been through a lot together, but that’s also the main problem. If Leon is married to either Ada or Claire, then that means the foundation of their relationship is built on trauma. That’s not healthy soil to grow a relationship from. The couple could have been through extensive therapy over the years, but the unique nature of their work could make it difficult to properly unpack everything.

The answer will become clear some day, but not just yet. What we wanted to convey in the final scene is simple: Leon now has a ‘place to go home to’, and we hope you can imagine the peaceful moments he spends there.

Ada Wong Isn’t Exactly Marriage Material

Don’t get me wrong. I think Ada Wong is one of the coolest characters in all of Resident Evil. I also think she would make a terrible partner, though. As an independent mercenary-for-hire, she has constantly served her own interests and isn’t afraid to betray people in order to see her goals through. People can change, but that’s a fundamental piece of Ada’s personality. Nothing is impossible, but it’s hard to imagine Ada being willing to settle down in any way. On the flip side, it would be compelling to see such a cold character fall in love.

Claire Redfield Simply Seems Too Busy

The last time players saw Claire Redfield in a Resident Evil game was in 2015’s Revelations 2. The series hasn’t revealed what she’s been up to in the past decade, but she was working for TerraSave back then. She may still be working for the anti-bioweapon humanitarian agency. If that’s the case, then it’s hard to envision a world where she and Leon are able to make their schedules align. Fans have been wanting a new Resident Evil game with Claire Redfield for a long time. I would love for her to return, but I don’t know if coming back as Leon’s wife is the right call. Both have jobs that are simply too serious and time-consuming. However, on the other hand, this also means that Leon and Claire may have trouble relating to other people who don’t work in similar fields. This could ultimately draw them even closer together.

Leon’s Mysterious Spouse Could Introduce a New Character

There is also the argument that Leon’s super serious line of work makes it hard for him to be married to anyone in general. That’s definitely true. However, this also opens the door for a more grounded happy ending for Leon in the future. There’s no telling where Leon is headed after Requiem, but it would be great if his eventual last chapter in the series ended with him getting to just relax and settle down at home with whoever he’s married to. For Leon to truly be at peace once his time in Resident Evil is over, a new character that isn’t involved in any international conspiracies or bioterrorism might be the best route. Leon Kennedy is a fan-favorite of many fans, so a random new character may not sit well with those who have been shipping him with Ada and Claire for a long time. It could be the only way to end his story in a way that ensures actual retirement, though.

Resident Evil Requiem Marks a New Era for the Franchise

With its fantastic balance between horror and action and strong storytelling, Resident Evil‘s future is looking bright. The story may have been left open-ended, but that has paved the way for plenty of Resident Evil 10 theories to pop up. It’s going to be really exciting to see if the next game finally addresses Leon’s marriage.

There’s also the possibility that Leon might even potentially be married to Resident Evil 4‘s Ashley Graham. This would still be a relationship founded on trauma, but it’s definitely not off the table. Whether it’s Ada, Claire, Ashley, or a completely new character is bound to be a big debate in the fan base until something is officially confirmed. Until then, all fans can do is theorize about who Leon’s lucky bride is.
