It Looks Like Call of Duty Is Starting to Overtake Battlefield 6

It Looks Like Call of Duty Is Starting to Overtake Battlefield 6

Call of Duty HQ is currently ranked as the second most popular game on both PlayStation and Xbox consoles in weekly U.S. player engagement, whereas Battlefield 6 is on a slight decline across both platforms going by the same metric. Although this trend suggests Battlefield 6 may be losing momentum faster than its main rival, the comparison is complicated by the fact that multiple Call of Duty titles contribute to COD HQ‘s performance, with no reliable way to isolate their individual engagement figures.

Battlefield 6 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 hit the market on October 10 and November 14, respectively. On November 19, Electronic Arts proclaimed Battlefield 6 to be the best-selling shooter game of 2025. A next-day report from Circana substantiated that claim, stating that EA’s title had already become this year’s best-selling U.S. game after just a few weeks.

Battlefield 6’s First Big Controversy Was a Call of Duty Feature First

Battlefield 6 is finally here, and one particular feature seems to be taking a page out of Call of Duty’s book, and not in a good way.

Call of Duty HQ Maintains No. 2 Spot as Battlefield 6 Slips to 7th in U.S. Activity

A month later, Battlefield 6 is believed to have lost significant steam. That’s according to some new insights from Circana Senior Director Mat Piscatella, who recently shared the firm’s latest weekly snapshot of the most popular games in the U.S. Circana estimates that Call of Duty HQ is currently the second most-played title on both Xbox and PlayStation by weekly active users, while Battlefield 6 slipped from sixth to seventh place for the week ending December 13.

While Activision’s series appears to be maintaining momentum following the release of Black Ops 7, comparisons are complicated by the fact that Call of Duty HQ aggregates multiple titles, including the free-to-play COD: Warzone. Coupled with recent reports suggesting that Black Ops 7 launch sales were significantly down in select markets, Battlefield 6 could still retain its U.S. sales lead by year’s end. However, its near-future prospects in player engagement appear more difficult to predict.

Battlefield 6 Isn’t Outperforming Call of Duty’s Console Activity, But It’s Doing Better on Steam

Although Call of Duty currently leads Battlefield 6 in Circana’s player activity rankings on consoles, the trend appears reversed on Steam. On December 25, Call of Duty HQ recorded a concurrent Steam peak of 51,017 players, just over half of Battlefield 6’s 99,369, according to SteamDB data. Given the former figure combines multiple games, it would appear Black Ops 7 is still trailing behind Battlefield 6 in user activity on Valve’s storefront. Battlefield 6‘s seventh-place finish in console activity is not necessarily a sign of trouble, as it still illustrates that even two and a half months following its release, the shooter continues to maintain a healthy base. However, even if Black Ops 7 is underperforming on its own, the cumulative effect of Warzone and the last few Call of Duty titles means Battlefield is not yet capable of closing that ecosystem gap.

Battlefield RedSec Could Make a Difference in the Future

DICE and EA are working on this, though, as underlined by the late October 2025 launch of Battlefield RedSec. A free-to-play battle royale game with progression that carries over to a separate premium multiplayer title, RedSec is to Battlefield 6 what Warzone is to Black Ops 7. Upcoming seasonal content, playlist updates, and other adjustments could shift player engagement in either direction, but RedSec positions EA to more effectively challenge Call of Duty’s ecosystem dominance in the near term.
