Sometimes an idea seems good on paper, but then someone tries it out, and it goes horribly wrong in a way nobody could have predicted. And then other times, an idea seems so bad from the start that you question how anyone involved didn’t step in and say, “Let’s not do this.” Katy Perry‘s recent performance featuring a moment in which she entered an inflatable tube and got tossed into the audience lands squarely in the latter category.
Last week, Katy Perry performed at the annual Isle of MTV Malta concert event in Floriana, Malta. The concert was a greatest hits collection, with the 41-year-old singer and songwriter performing some of her most popular songs. But one moment during Perry’s performance stood out and went viral online. During her performance of “I Kissed a Girl,” Perry hopped into an oversized inflatable plastic bottle and was tossed into the audience. The idea was that the crowd would move her around for a bit, and then she’d return to the stage. That’s not exactly what happened, as seen in the video below.
According to multiple people who attended the event, Perry was tossed around inside her bottle for a few minutes as fans refused to roll her back to the stage. You can clearly see she’s not able to keep her balance inside the bottle as it gets moved around. Keep in mind there was a record-breaking heatwave happening in Malta when this happened. I can only imagine how hot and gross the inside of that plastic bottle was by the end of this experience.
Eventually, Perry made it back to the stage and, according to reports, continued her performance without any issue. The event will be broadcast globally on MTV in September. I’ll be curious how much time is dedicated to showing the plastic bottle incident.
