Hideo Kojima’s upcoming espionage game Physint has received another update, with new details offering a closer look at the story behind his long-awaited return to the genre. First announced in 2024, Physint is being developed by Kojima Productions in partnership with Xbox, following the project’s earlier association with PlayStation.

Although Kojima is best known for creating Metal Gear Solid, he has repeatedly stressed that Physint won’t simply revisit the same stealth formula fans have come to expect from him. The project is intended as a new take on action-espionage, with a film-inspired presentation and an ensemble cast including Bill Skarsgård, Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe. Skarsgård was first confirmed as the lead in September, but overall Kojima Productions has shared very little about the game’s characters, setting, or mechanics. With no release date yet announced, recently circulated documents offer one of the clearest looks yet at its creative direction.

Hideo Kojima’s Physint Story Document Is Over 150 Pages Long

As part of Kojima Productions’ tenth-anniversary exhibition, Beyond the Strand, which opened in Tokyo on October 31, the studio displayed internal production materials from Physint. Among the items was a confidential story document that reportedly exceeds 150 pages in Japanese, while its English translation contains roughly 50,000 words. The materials also feature concept art, giving visitors a glimpse of the game’s visual ideas alongside its narrative planning. As of now, the full document has not been made public, with access reportedly limited to selected actors, artists, and other people involved in the project. That said, while its existence may be exciting and suggests substantial story work has already been done on the game, it doesn’t necessarily mean the entire gameplay script is finished.

Perhaps the most intriguing part of the displayed document is its cover, which bears the words “A New Cold War Begins.” The phrase echoes a tagline that appeared on Physint‘s September promotional artwork, hinting at a story involving the type of geopolitical tensions that always make for a good spy story. Even more interestingly, three intelligence-gathering disciplines are also visible, titled HUMINT, SIGINT, and OSINT. These refer to information obtained through human sources, intercepted signals, and open-source materials, respectively. Their inclusion may point to a broader focus on espionage intelligence work, though it remains unclear whether these concepts will translate into gameplay systems or simply inform the narrative.

Kojima has previously discussed his desire to distinguish Physint from the Metal Gear series despite their shared emphasis on espionage. Speaking on his Koji10 radio program in October, the developer said, “It’s about spies, but I want plenty of new ideas and a different kind of spy action.” That could make the document’s intelligence terminology especially interesting to longtime fans, who may be wondering how the new project will approach stealth, infiltration, and information gathering. However, Kojima has not revealed how those elements might work, and no gameplay footage has been shown.

While it is an exciting first look at what’s to come, these documents may just illustrate how much work still remains on Physint with its Xbox partnership. Kojima has recently indicated that the core plot, overall concept, and storyboards are already in place, while character scans and other early development work have only just begun. The project appears to be in an early stage, and the existence of a lengthy story document should not be mistaken for evidence that a release or major reveal is approaching. For now, fans have a better idea of the game’s potential themes, but the biggest questions surrounding Physint, including what it will actually play like and when it might arrive, could remain unanswered for some time.
