In a major departure from past LEGO video games, LEGO Batman: Legacy of The Dark Knight will feature just seven playable characters. But while LEGO Batman: Legacy of The Dark Knight‘s roster is much smaller than most LEGO games that have preceded it, each of the seven characters will be given much more depth in terms of gameplay and customization.

Announced at Gamescom 2025, LEGO Batman: Legacy of The Dark Knight is the next major release from developer TT Games, the same studio behind the vast majority of licensed LEGO video games of the last two decades. But where many of those past licensed LEGO games adapted the movie franchises they were based on as closely as possible, LEGO Batman: Legacy of The Dark Knight is taking a slightly different approach. The upcoming family-friendly action-adventure game will revolve around an original story that encompasses the Caped Crusader’s entire crime-fighting career, albeit one featuring a plethora of references to the hero’s live-action and animated outings sprinkled in throughout.

A core appeal of past LEGO games has been their vast roster of iconic characters, with most TT Games-developed LEGO titles letting players take control of all manner of heroes, villains, sidekicks, and background characters. The size of these LEGO game rosters has only increased as time has gone on, starting with a respectable 59 characters in 2005’s LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game, and culminating in an eye-watering 380+ characters in 2022’s LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

Given the sheer size of these past LEGO game rosters, it’s only natural that not every character is entirely distinct. Instead, most LEGO games sort each character into a handful of classes which determine their in-game abilities, weapons, and animations. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, for instance, sorts its 380+ characters into 9 core classes, those being Jedi, Hero, Scavenger, Scoundrel, Bounty Hunter, Villain, Dark Side, Astromech Droid, and Protocol Droid.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of The Dark Knight is breaking this long-held tradition. According to LEGO Batman‘s official website, the game will feature just seven playable characters. These will be Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Jim Gordon, Catwoman, and Talia al Ghul. Players will unlock these characters as they progress through LEGO Batman: Legacy of The Dark Knight‘s story.

How LEGO Batman: Legacy of The Dark Knight Is Giving More Depth to its Smaller Roster

In a recent interview with IGN’s Simon Cardy, the head of TT Games development team Jonathan Smith explained the benefits of streamlining this LEGO game’s roster so dramatically. Smith states that condensing the roster down to just a handful of playable characters ensures that they are “more differentiated with much deeper gameplay” than previous LEGO game characters. Furthermore, he says that the developers “really wanted to focus on making those characters really unique, making their personalities come across and their abilities very distinct.” The video accompanying IGN’s interview with Jonathan Smith shows this sentiment in action, presenting a new look at LEGO Batman: Legacy of The Dark Knight‘s Catwoman gameplay, where the character is shown using her unique ranged whip attack and an ability that summons cats to solve puzzles and torment enemies.

Along with distinct abilities, animations, and weapons, each of LEGO Batman: Legacy of The Dark Knight‘s seven playable characters will have their own dedicated upgrade system. Each character will also have access to an assortment of alternate outfits, many of which are likely to be directly inspired by live-action and animated Batman adaptations. Some of these outfits have already been teased in LEGO Batman‘s gameplay trailers, such as both Batman Returns and The Batman-inspired suits for Catwoman.
