LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is shaping up to be the most ambitious entry in the long-running LEGO game series yet. Blending open-world exploration with a sweeping narrative that spans the Dark Knight’s entire history, the game marks a bold creative pivot for the franchise for almost too many reasons to count. But as LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight draws closer to its May 22 launch, it’s hard to keep the excitement at bay any other way.

DC Comics president Jim Lee described the game as “a love letter to the world of Batman,” and the sheer scope of the confirmed feature set suggests that’s not hyperbole. TT Games has moved to Unreal Engine 5 for the first time, too, allowing the studio to build a more performance-friendly game that’s more immersive and technically detailed Gotham than ever before. So with all of that said (and in the spirit of Batman’s iconic prep-time), fans may need to take notes on the comprehensive feature list coming on May 22.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Has Gone Gold

TT Games announces that LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight has officially gone gold and development is complete on the base game.

A Story That Covers Batman’s Full Legacy

For starters, rather than dropping players into a single, contained Batman adventure, Legacy of the Dark Knight traces Bruce Wayne’s entire arc from its earliest days to modernity. The story follows his transformation from a League of Shadows initiate into Gotham City’s iconic protector, weaving together iconic moments drawn from film, television, comics, and games, all the while. TT Games has reportedly designed this campaign to feel like the definitive Batman journey, incorporating decades of lore into a single cohesive narrative while retaining the studio’s signature brand of irreverent LEGO humor.

Driving that story is one of the most impactful rogues’ galleries ever assembled for a LEGO superhero game, with confirmed villain appearances in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight including the Joker, the Penguin, Poison Ivy, Ra’s al Ghul, Bane, and Mister Freeze. Notably, the game’s take on the Joker draws from multiple interpretations of the character—like nods to Jack Nicholson’s theatrical portrayal and Heath Ledger’s grounded, menacing version—and even traces his origins to the Red Hood gang seen in certain comic storylines. Harley Quinn also plays a major role, though her playable content is tied to post-launch DLC.

An Open-World Gotham City Packed With Things to Do

All of this narrative takes place in Legacy of the Dark Knight‘s open-world rendition of Gotham City. Split across four distinct islands, each zone will reportedly contain crimes to stop, puzzles to solve, and surprises to uncover. Familiar landmarks like Arkham Asylum, Ace Chemicals, Wayne Tower, and the Gotham Botanical Gardens are all present and explorable, lending the city a sense of authentic geography any Batman fan will immediately recognize. The confirmed list of open-world activities gives a clear picture of just how much players will have to do outside the main story:

  • Stopping street crimes
  • Solving environmental puzzles
  • Rooftop traversal challenges
  • Collectible hunting
  • Side challenges

Getting around this impressive version of Gotham is equally varied, with players able to zip between buildings using Batman’s grapple launcher, soar over the skyline with the Batglider, or tear through the streets in one of several Batmobiles or Batcycles—including the legendary Tumbler from Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy. The Batpod from The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises has also been confirmed as a traversal vehicle, along with an animated series-inspired Batmobile and a sleek muscle car reminiscent of Robert Pattinson’s take on the character. Together with even more customization that remains unrevealed, these options give the open world a strong sense of moment-to-moment mobility and variety.

Seven Playable Characters and All-New Ways to Play

Now, unlike older LEGO games that offered enormous character rosters sometimes running into the hundreds, Legacy of the Dark Knight takes a more deliberate approach to its playable cast. LEGO: Legacy of the Dark Knight has 7 playable characters currently confirmed: Batman, Jim Gordon, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman, and Talia al Ghul. Each of the seven characters comes with a fully unique toolkit, including distinct gadgets, individual traversal tools, and specialized combat options that reflect their personalities and roles in the Batman mythos.

As such, the game also introduces a dynamic new LEGO Batman combat system that draws heavily from the Batman: Arkham series’ free-flow combat, adapted to be more approachable, featuring fluid attack chains, counters, and over-the-top LEGO takedowns specific to each character. Additionally, beyond straight combat, Legacy of the Dark Knight incorporates detective gameplay elements that tap into Batman’s reputation as the world’s greatest detective. Players will use stealth techniques alongside their combat arsenal; Batgirl, for example, has been specifically highlighted as capable of hacking into doors and locked systems.

New Gameplay Features Like Co-Op and Difficulty Options

Legacy of the Dark Knight supports two-player local co-op, keeping one of the franchise’s most beloved features intact for family and couch-gaming sessions. However, the game also introduces a meaningful suite of difficulty options. Classic difficulty offers the approachable LEGO experience series veterans will recognize, while Caped Crusader difficulty provides a more enhanced challenge for players who want to push themselves. For those looking for the ultimate test, Dark Knight difficulty is described as an unforgiving mode that will demand mastery of the new combat system.

All-Out Customization: Batcave, Vehicles, Suits, and More

One of the game’s most impressive feats so far is that customization seems remarkably expansive in several different areas. Primarily, the Batcave serves as a major connective tissue in Legacy of the Dark Knight, a living, evolving progression hub and collectible showcase that grows alongside Batman’s story. When players first discover the cave, it’s sparse and unfinished, but as the story progresses, the Batcave gradually fills out and transforms into a proper fortress, complete with a WayneTech computer for replaying missions and an upgrade terminal for enhancing character abilities.

Players can customize the Batcave with an impressive array of items, all of which serve as both functional collectibles and aesthetic decoration. Confirmed customization options include displayable Batmobiles, trophies, collectibles, props, wearable Batsuits, and unlockable cosmetics that celebrate moments from the story. Many cosmetic items and suits are purchasable through the in-game Bat-Mite Shop, giving players ongoing goals to chase throughout and beyond the main campaign.

That Batsuit collection is one of Legacy of the Dark Knight‘s most impressive features, boasting 100 total outfits across all playable characters. Confirmed suit variants for Batman alone include:

  • Golden Age Batsuit (inspired by Detective Comics #27, 1939)
  • The Dark Knight Returns suit
  • Batman Beyond content
  • Arkham-inspired cosmetics
  • Comic-era Batman variants
  • Film-inspired costumes (spanning the Adam West, Michael Keaton, and Robert Pattinson eras)
  • Batman Ninja variant
  • Novelty suits, including a rainbow variant and a pirate outfit

The aforementioned vehicle lineup is equally expansive, with multiple Batmobiles and Batcycles confirmed for both open-world use and display within the Batcave. Additional DLC Batmobile variants are also on the way, and players who purchase real LEGO Batman sets released in early 2026 can unlock special golden variants of select vehicles.

DLC Content and Pre-Order Bonuses

For fans who pre-order or opt for a LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight deluxe edition, all pre-orders (including the standard edition) come with The Dark Knight Returns Batsuit at launch, a sought-after costume inspired by Frank Miller’s acclaimed 1986 comic book series. Players who create or already have a WB Games account can separately unlock the Golden Age Batsuit at launch—a classic design based on Batman’s very first appearance in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. Deluxe Edition pre-orders sweeten the deal considerably; the full content breakdown is as follows:

  • 72-hour early access (starting May 19, 2026)
  • The Dark Knight Returns Batsuit (pre-order bonus, all editions)
  • Legacy Collection DLC: Arkham Trilogy Pack, Batman Beyond Pack, and Party Music Pack
  • Mayhem Collection DLC (September 2026): Joker and Harley Quinn story mission, Mayhem Mode with both characters as playable, plus the Sinister Pack (7 suits, 1 Batmobile, 1 Batcave prop set)
  • Extra Batcave props, additional vehicles, and additional suits across all playable characters

Legacy of the Dark Knight Might Be the Most Expansive Batman Game Ever

With a narrative-driven campaign, a richly detailed open-world Gotham, a focused but deeply differentiated roster, and one of the most expansive collections of Bat-cosmetics in gaming history, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is certainly one of the most anticipated games of the year, but it’s also poised to be a landmark entry for TT Games. There’s actually so much content already revealed that it’s a bit difficult to fit it all in one place, which is certainly impressive for a franchise that has been refining its formula for nearly two decades. Whether it can stick the landing remains to be seen, but based on everything confirmed so far, Legacy of the Dark Knight already looks like it’ll be a must-play for Batman fans when the game arrives on May 22.
