Mass Effect: Legendary Edition could finally regain one of its most notable missing features with a major fan-made restoration targeting this year’s N7 Day celebration. Although Mass Effect: Legendary Edition brought BioWare’s original trilogy to modern platforms in 2021, one beloved component of Mass Effect 3 was notably missing, and fans have craved that experience ever since.
When Legendary Edition first launched, fans were disappointed to learn BioWare chose not to include the widely celebrated Mass Effect 3 co-op multiplayer mode. The studio explained that restoring its online infrastructure would have required substantial development work, with additional complications surrounding ME3‘s progression systems and ongoing support. Instead, BioWare focused its resources on updating the trilogy’s single-player campaigns with new visuals and updated gameplay. That decision ultimately meant players who wanted the full Mass Effect 3 experience still had to return to the original 2012 release over the enhanced re-release. However, Mass Effect community mods may fix that problem soon.
Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Is Finally Coming to Legendary Edition
According to PC Gamer, the ME3Tweaks modding team is preparing to release its restoration of Mass Effect 3 multiplayer for Legendary Edition on November 7, better known to fans as N7 Day. The project has reportedly been in development for three years and goes far beyond simply porting the original multiplayer into the remastered collection. Modder Audemus describes the project as an extensive remaster, incorporating upgraded textures, lighting, and shaders alongside HDR support, native controller functionality, and a redesigned interface. The team has also worked to improve networking, address lingering bugs, and make the multiplayer more compatible with future mods.

Drag weapons to fill the grid
Beyond restoring the original experience, ME3Tweaks is also introducing brand-new ways to play. One addition, called Unified, lets players fight enemies from multiple factions in the same match, rather than facing a single faction throughout. Players can also get online through ME3Tweaks’ proprietary servers or set up private servers of their own. Moreover, fans will be happy to learn that the team has extensive experience restoring missing Mass Effect content, having also previously brought back the Pinnacle Station DLC that was excluded from the first game’s remaster. A separate modder, PayDay, has already released a playable multiplayer restoration for Legendary Edition, but the upcoming ME3Tweaks project aims to offer a more extensive overhaul.
The timing of this restoration is especially significant following EA’s October 21 announcement that BioWare is closing and development on the next Mass Effect game has been canceled. The decision brought an abrupt end to the legendary studio that created the franchise, leaving its future uncertain and fans mourning the ME that could have been. N7 Day, traditionally a time to celebrate Mass Effect and anticipate its future, now arrives under considerably different circumstances. With the ME3Tweaks project targeting that same date, fans will at least have something new to look forward to during an otherwise difficult period for the series.
There are still reasons to believe Mass Effect will remain relevant beyond BioWare’s closure. Amazon’s planned television adaptation is reportedly still in development, though it has yet to receive a release date, while dedicated modders continue finding ways to preserve and expand Mass Effect: Legendary Edition with new content. While the Amazon show may not guarantee another major Mass Effect release, the ongoing community mod scene demonstrates how much enthusiasm still remains for the franchise. With N7 Day approaching, the return of Mass Effect 3 multiplayer serves as a timely reminder that BioWare’s legacy will live on through the community it created.
