LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Reveals Release Date, New Villains, and More at The Game Awards

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight revealed its official release date at The Game Awards 2025, also giving fans a closer look at its humor, gameplay, and a couple of previously unannounced villains. It had been more than two months since Traveller’s Tales and Warner Bros. Games had dropped any major info about LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, but a new trailer shows the mix of comedy and drama that players can expect to see in May 2026.

The new LEGO Batman game was first announced during the Gamescom Opening Night Live presentation on August 19, showing off Batman’s fighting styles, gadgets, allies, gallery of foes, and some new LEGO-brick-based looks for the Batmobile. Featuring slapstick comedy moments presented in the LEGO games’ traditional style, that first look also showed the characters from DC’s most historically successful superhero franchise weren’t above visiting their usual level of dark drama, with Batman going toe-to-toe with The Joker, The Penguin, Bane, and a variety of elaborately dressed criminal gangs.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Confirmed Features

  • Original story with elements from Batman’s greatest moments
  • Solo and two-player co-op game modes
  • Mayhem Mode with Harley Quinn and The Joker as playable characters
  • 100 different suits and outfits
  • More than 20 vehicles
  • 250+ Batcave props and trophies
  • Playable characters: Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman, Jim Gordon, and Talia al Ghul
  • Villains: The Joker, The Penguin, Bane, Poison Ivy, Ra’s al Ghul, Mr, Freeze, and Two-Face
  • Combat system based on the Batman Arkham series
  • Gadgets, including Batarangs and grappling hooks
  • Large, open-world Gotham City setting

As revealed during The Game Awards 2025, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will launch on May 29, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC through Steam and Epic Games Store, with the standard edition retailing for $69.99. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is also planned, and its release date will be announced soon. Although the game’s launch is still about half a year away, pre-orders are available now, with bonuses that include three days of early access and a costume for Batman based on The Dark Knight Returns, giving players one of the best Batsuits in recent memory. A Deluxe Edition is also planned for $10 more, including features like a new story mission and Mayhem Mode, which are planned for release in September 2026 and will add The Joker and Harley Quinn as playable characters.

The trailer also popped in a few unexpected faces from Batman’s past, as a couple of ’90s movie villains made their presence known. Two-Face and Mr. Freeze have been added to the growing list of villains in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, reflecting their appearances and mannerisms from 1995’s Batman Forever and 1997’s Batman & Robin, respectively. Along with a newly revealed Firefly and an older list that also includes Poison Ivy and Ra’s al Ghul, players should have a wide variety of adversaries to face off against next May.

Back when the upcoming LEGO Batman game was first announced, TT Games head of development Jonathan Smith referred to LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight as “the definitive essential Batman story,” saying that it would incorporate elements from Batman‘s best movies, television shows, comics, and video games, with a goal of recapturing the magic of Bruce Wane’s complete journey over the past 86 years of mixed media but presented in a brand-new story. The presentation at The Game Awards 2025 showcased images that Batman fans from across the ages will find familiar, transitioning from a modern Christian Bale-like Bruce Wayne to a Catwoman who looks like she just stepped out of 1992. This wide variety of through-the-ages presentation is helped along by confirmation from the development team that the game will support 100 different costumes and outfits for its playable characters.

News of the release date actually broke a few hours early through a rather unusual leak made via Steam. An English-language post on the platform encouraged fans to add the game to their wishlists, but when switched to a Spanish-language version, that section of text reportedly changed to “LEGO BATMAN COMING MAY 29 2026,” which was, oddly enough, printed in English. Some fans reacting to a Reddit post revealing this weird circumstance were disappointed that the game would be arriving so late into the year, and they emphasized that with that much time left until release, it had better be put together with a heavy degree of polish. A video showcase from late September showcasing Legacy’s of the Dark Knight‘s rich LEGO world suggested that will be the case, as tiny details like water droplets on character’s bodies and individual fibers on capes showed an intense degree of realism and attention to detail.
