Magic: The Gathering has made an official statement about the controversy surrounding the recently revealed alternate art version of The One Ring in The Hobbit. The announcement confirms that the artwork for the special Magic card was painted over pre-existing art.
Magic: The Gathering‘s upcoming crossover with The Hobbit stands as one of the most highly anticipated sets of 2026. Magic: The Gathering recently revealed several new cards coming as part of the set, showing off cards based on beloved characters, like Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield, and Smaug among others. The company also confirmed multiple reprints of older cards coming as part of the expansion, including cards like Arcane Signet, Wood Elves, and the iconic One Ring. However, the reprint of The One Ring is now at the center of a new controversy for the card game.

Magic: The Gathering’s New One Ring Card Was Traced
Magic: The Gathering shared official statements on the game’s social media account from the company and artist Dan Frazier. The statement from Frazier confirmed that the longtime Magic artist had painted over Marta Nael’s artwork for The One Ring when creating the new alternate-art version for The Hobbit. Wizards of the Coast revealed that the full release of the card will feature artist credits for both Frazier and Nael, with Nael also receiving compensation from the company for the card. Dan Frazier shared that he has reached out to Marta Nael as well, to offer an apology for the error in the new One Ring card.

The controversy surrounding The One Ring comes as the card is easily one of the biggest draws from Magic‘s The Hobbit crossover. The One Ring was first printed as a Mythic Rare card in The Lord of the Rings, later receiving alternate art versions in Bundles for the set and a Secret Lair. The card even received a special one-of-a-kind Elvish text version, with the serialized One Ring selling for more than $2 million to Post Malone in 2023. The reprinted version of The One Ring will be exclusive to Collector’s Booster packs of The Hobbit.
Magic‘s crossover with The Hobbit will include plenty of exciting new cards beyond The One Ring. The expansion will include multiple Showcase treatments for cards based on the covers of the original novels by J.R.R. Tolkien, showing off Thorin, Mountain-King and The Arkenstone. Smaug, the Magnificent is set to receive a special variant in Collector’s Booster packs as well, with a “gleaming gold” variant limited to only 500 total copies. Wizards of the Coast also confirmed that five new cards in the set will be receiving Dwarven-language versions, with Arcane Signet revealed as the first.

Magic: The Gathering revealed much more than just its Hobbit cards during the recent MagicCon. Wizards of the Coast revealed more cards from the upcoming Marvel Super Heroes set during the showcase, revealing The Mind Stone as a follow-up to the Soul Stone card originally released in the Spider-Man crossover. The company also showed off the first cards from the next in-universe set, Reality Fracture, revealing a blue version of popular planeswalker Chandra and a color-shifted red version of the powerful Snapcaster Mage. Magic: The Gathering is primed to have a big year in 2026, with major crossovers and expansions of the game’s multiverse on the way soon.
