Wizards of the Coast has issued an official statement on Magic: The Gathering‘s sold-out Zeta Set Secret Lair, apologizing for issues and confirming a new sale period. The special Magic: The Gathering set featured reprints of iconic cards in the style of the beloved game’s original prototype cards.

The Wizards of the Coast card game’s Secret Lair products have introduced some of its most stylistically unique cards. Secret Lairs often see Wizards of the Coast teaming up with different artists for unusual and stunning card designs, reprinting popular cards from the game’s past with bold new artwork. Magic: The Gathering has also introduced a plethora of new crossovers to the game through its Secret Lair products, including the recent Halloween-themed Corn Maze Superdrop bringing collaborations with Marvel: Zombies, KPop Demon Hunters, and Jim Henson’s Labyrinth. Now, Wizards of the Coast is apologizing for problems with a particular Secret Lair.

Magic: The Gathering is Bringing Back Sold-Out Secret Lair

Magic: The Gathering has offered an official statement about the previously sold-out Zeta Set. Secret Lair Senior Director Matthew Hodgins explained that the Zeta Set’s initial release on September 2 saw a major “external service disruption” for its sales systems, causing many fans to lose their chance to buy the product. Hodgins revealed that due to the issues with the Zeta Set, the Secret Lair will be given a new sales period on December 9, giving fans another opportunity to secure the special Magic promo cards. The December sale was confirmed to last for a 24-hour, print-to-demand event for the Magic set, helping ensure fans who want one can order the Zeta Set during the sale.

Hodgins explained more about the technical side of the Zeta Set’s problems within the announcement as well. The Senior Director shared that he had made the decision to pause the queue letting customers into the shop, intending to address the issues before more customers were allowed in. However, Wizards of the Coast’s Secret Lair team only realized after unpausing the system that far less inventory of Magic‘s new Secret Lair was available than originally anticipated. Hodgins did confirm that customers who had already secured their Zeta Set order can submit a support ticket until October 9 to cancel the order, with no explanation needed for the cancellation.

Magic: The Gathering‘s Zeta Set serves as one of the card game’s more unusual Secret Lair releases. Rather than being a pre-determined set of cards like most Secret Lairs, the Zeta Set features randomized booster packs of seven cards from a set of 121 unique cards, with each having three different printings. The Secret Lair is a collaboration with New York-based art collective MSCHF, with the cards aiming to replicate the appearance of playtest versions for Magic: The Gathering‘s oldest cards.

The Zeta Set is not Magic: The Gathering‘s only remaining product for 2026, with one more major expansion on the way for the card game. Wizards of the Coast will close out the year with its newest crossover set, introducing Magic cards based on the Star Trek franchise. Leaks have also hinted at the potential release of a special product during the holiday season, rumored to be debuting a brand-new Spider-Man Commander Deck in early December. Between new crossovers and a chance to pick up an exclusive Secret Lair, Wizards of the Coast looks to end Magic‘s 2026 on a high note.
