In a strange twist, Wizards of the Coast reveals an original Universes Beyond set for Magic: The Gathering, coming in April 2027. When Wizards of the Coast first announced that Universes Beyond sets would come as Standard-legal releases instead of just Eternal products, not all fans were happy about the news. Some were concerned this would mean fewer original in-multiverse sets or a bloated card pool for Standard. Magic: The Gathering‘s UB sets often come with availability or scalping issues, too, as they also appeal to collectors and fans of their respective IP.
The most recent release for the game was Reality Fracture, a set that is already loved by fans due to its setting, story, and cards. However, Reality Fracture marks the end of an era for MTG because it kills off the face of the game after a long 19-year run. The next and final set for 2026 is Star Trek, and it’s releasing in just over a month on November 13. After that, WotC has announced three in-multiverse sets for 2027, and now a brand-new original set that also happens to be a Marvel UB release.
Magic: The Gathering Officially Announces First-Ever Original UB Set

Wizards of the Coast just announced a brand-new original set for Magic: The Gathering in 2027, but it’s actually Universes Beyond. The set, called Marvel: Darkhold Destiny, was created in cooperation with Marvel as a Magic-first product that still adds existing Marvel characters with a new twist. Not only that, but the setting and one character are original creations for Darkhold Destiny, with the character debuting in a dedicated Marvel comic in February 2027 as a digital release or April 2027 for a physical one. The new set also debuts in April 2027, and WotC states that the story was “crafted by our Narrative team with Magic in mind” and will contain werewolves, vampires, and witches.

The set is confirmed to include Commander decks, Scene Boxes, a special release called Arcanum Bundle, and a Draft Night bundle. Play Boosters and Collectors Boosters are also returning, and so are special card treatments for various characters. There are several cards in the official Darkhold Destiny gallery at this time, but more will likely be revealed in the coming months. The fact that this is an original, Magic-specific set despite being a Marvel crossover is an interesting twist, and it may be received better than other non-hard-fantasy UB sets. The collaboration between WotC and Marvel is not stopping anytime soon, and recently, MTG revealed a crossover with Marvel Zombies, KPop Demon Hunters, and Labyrinth (the movie starring David Bowie).
Although there are issues with the reception of UB sets, WotC seems to be listening to fan feedback, such as working on a Magic-adjacent UB set. Recently, Magic: The Gathering‘s sold-out Zeta set was also confirmed for reprints and a new sale window of 24 hours, which is what many fans have been asking WotC to do with Secret Lair products.
Not only that, but WotC is also bringing back fan-favorite cards from older sets into Standard. An example is how Reality Fracture brought back MTG‘s Tarmogoyf after 19 years since its inception. It won’t be as powerful as it was back in the day, but it’s great to have it back.
