A popular Magic: The Gathering card by the name of Displacer Kitten is making a comeback soon. Magic: The Gathering has enjoyed some great set launches in 2026, and it’s about to close the year with a bang by releasing a monumental in-multiverse set called Reality Fracture, followed by the polarizing Star Trek UB set. While Star Trek is being hyped up by some fans of the series, other MTG players feel that sci-fi is a bad match for the game, especially when it’s not from in-multiverse sets like Edge of Eternities.
Instead, Magic: The Gathering‘s Reality Fracture set is being received very well despite not having launched yet, and fans are excited to discover what happens with Jace’s plan to create a new multiverse and whether the other characters will manage to stop him. Though the set launches on October 2, pre-release events will start on September 25, in just over one week. Magic: The Gathering‘s Reality Fracture set is already a hit among fans thanks to some of its cards, including what is basically Displacer Kitten in a new suit.
MTG’s Displacer Kitten Officially Returns on October 2
Magic: The Gathering‘s new Reality Fracture cards include one called Flickering Hound, and it’s basically a new version of Displacer Kitten with a slightly different ability and a new card color. Displacer Kitten is a 3 generic 1 Blue creature with power and toughness 2, and it comes with the Avoidance ability, which allows the owner to exile one nonland permanent and then return it to the field under its owner’s control whenever they cast a noncreature spell. Flickering Hound is basically the same card, but it works for creatures. This creature costs 3 generic and 1 White for a 2/2, and it allows the owner to exile a creature and then return it to the field under its owner’s control whenever they cast a creature spell. This is a perfect mirror to Displacer Kitten, and it even makes sense thematically for the set, given that Reality Fracture is about Jace reshaping reality in a new multiverse.

This doesn’t only mean that Displacer Kitten fans will have another very similar card to play with, but also that Displacer Hound will now be legal in Standard for the next three years, starting October 2. Cards that allow players to “flicker” permanents by exiling them and returning them to the field are usually very powerful and valuable, as they are a guaranteed way to proc ETB effects (enter the battlefield). These can be effects like creating new tokens, giving existing creatures buffs, generating mana, and more. For example, MTG banned Badgermole Cub in Standard recently, and it has earthbend 1 as ETB, meaning it would put a +1/+1 counter on a given land if flickered. Flickering can also cause chain reactions with cards that benefit from permanents entering the field, and the new Displacer Hound can do that a lot with several low-cost creatures from MTG Foundations and thereafter.

As for the imminent release, MTG‘s Reality Fracture will have supply issues in North America in the weeks after October 2, according to Wizards of the Coast. Hopefully, fans won’t have to experience issues with scalping, availability, and high prices, which is what happened with The Hobbit set.
While Reality Fracture is a wrap on in-multiverse sets this year, Magic: The Gathering‘s 2027 roadmap already seems to have a great start. The first will be Nauctis, with an underwater focus, followed by Kamigawa: Titanbreach to bring a monsters vs. mechs theme to the game, and finally the Afrofuturist plane of Zhalfir.
