According to police reports, a man has been arrested after threatening to blow up Nintendo headquarters in Kyoto, Japan, with some explosives that they claimed to have planted around the company’s main building. As of this writing, police are still trying to uncover a motive behind the recent bomb threats against Nintendo.

The arrest came just days after Nintendo announced some changes to the Switch 2’s current prices. In light of the ongoing DRAM shortage crisis, which has caused the prices of essential components to skyrocket, Nintendo announced that the Switch 2’s price would be increased by $50 starting September 1. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said during an investor Q&A that additional price changes to the Switch 2 lineup may still happen throughout 2026 and 2027.

A New Bomb Threat Against Nintendo Leads To An Arrest

Recently, Nintendo’s corporate headquarters in Kyoto was threatened by a lone suspect who claimed to have “already planted multiple bombs” across the building. Police said that a 27-year-old unemployed man has been arrested after admitting to sending bomb threats to Nintendo as far back as March. The police report stated that an envelope arrived at Nintendo’s HQ in Minami Ward, Kyoto City on March 13 which contained threatening messages that said, “I’m going to blow you all up,” and, “This plan cannot be stopped.” The threats subsequently disrupted Nintendo’s business operations.

After searching through Nintendo’s Kyoto headquarters and the surrounding area, police stated that no evidence of explosives were found. Though the man’s name was not revealed, police said that the 27-year-old suspect lives in Hekinan City, Aichi Prefecture. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody on May 12 in connection with the bombing threats. Although the suspect has reportedly admitted to his crimes, police are trying to determine a motive behind the bomb threats against Nintendo. Though the bomb threat against Nintendo may be a hoax, the case remains an ongoing matter.

Unfortunately, the threat against Nintendo’s Kyoto headquarters is not the first time that the gaming giant has been on the receiving end of bombing threats. In 2024, a 27-year-old man appeared in court after he was accused of making several bomb threats against Nintendo that disrupted the Live Tokyo 2024 event and the Splatoon 3 Koshien 2023 National Finals tournament. At the time, prosecutors pushed for a 1-year prison sentence in response to the threats. Additionally, the suspect in that case stated that their motive behind the threats was due to their growing frustration with Splatoon 3‘s gameplay, and said that their losses were due to Nintendo’s design choices.

It is worth noting that the recent bomb threat against Nintendo’s Kyoto headquarters has nothing to do with previous bomb threats pointed at the company in any way. Given that the Switch 2 is set to jump up in price starting September 1, Nintendo stated that it is looking to increase the ownership value of the Switch 2 to compensate for the imminent price changes. Despite the threats that it has endured, Nintendo’s continued work to develop more games for the Switch 2 continues unabated.
