Marathon developer Bungie just released the latest patch for its extraction looter shooter on March 17. Version 1.0.5 includes highly requested changes to item management, quality-of-life improvements to pre-Run menu navigation, bug fixes, new content, and more. The latest patch and everything it offers is available now to Marathon players on PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
Marathon has been in the hands of players for a little over two weeks now. Marathon‘s first impressions reveal a game with a strong foundation but a relatively steep learning curve. Players are dropped into a fairly minimal onboarding experience before quickly being pushed into its extraction loop, which can feel somewhat overwhelming at first. However, once its systems begin to click, the tension of looting, surviving against Marathon‘s challenging UESC AI enemies while fending off enemy teams to successfully extract can create a compelling experience. It does seem like Bungie has been actively listening to player feedback and making adjustments. For example, with its latest update, Bungie is adding some much requested improvements to the game’s Vault management and menu navigation.
Marathon Confirms Highly Requested Change Coming Next Week
Bungie gives Marathon players a heads up that a highly requested improvement is being added to the extraction shooter sometime next week.
Marathon‘s patch 1.0.5 rolled out to players on March 17. Among the most notable changes are significant increases to Vault item stack limits for consumables, ammo, salvage, and grenades, giving players more flexibility in how they store and manage gear between Runs.
The patch also introduces a new zone, Cryo Archive, expanding Marathon’s playable areas with an additional high-risk map. In the patch notes, Bungie included a short note that reads, “Good luck getting there,” which seems to indicate unlocking the new zone might be somewhat of a challenge. These latest changes come just one week after Marathon‘s 1.0.4 update.
Patch 1.0.5 also delivers a range of user interface and quality-of-life improvements aimed at making Marathon‘s core loop feel a bit more intuitive. Bungie has updated elements of the pre-Run experience to better present important information at a glance and improve overall usability. Inventory management has also been refined to reduce friction when organizing and equipping gear, which works with the expanded item stacks for Vault functionality.
Patch 1.0.5 improves menu navigation by including shortcuts to access different menu features. The patch looks to improve menu navigation, provide clearer feedback during gameplay interactions, and try to streamline player experience between Runs. Players can also now drag and drop weapon mods for easier management. During Runs, players can also now activate exfil beacons while downed.
Bungie seems to be working hard to smooth out some of Marathon‘s rougher edges, particularly around its user interface. It looks like the developer is prioritizing usability and player flow in areas that directly impact how quickly players can prepare for and jump into Runs. While some of Marathon’s more complex systems may still take time for players to understand and get used to, continued refinements like what was added for patch 1.0.5 could go a long way toward making the experience feel more approachable. Perhaps it could even help prevent the review bombing Marathon has experienced recently.
Beyond these updates, patch 1.0.5 continues Bungie’s push to refine Marathon’s overall experience with bug fixes and stability improvements. The developer is also testing a much-requested Duos mode for Marathon, which could give players more flexibility in gameplay. As Bungie continues to iterate and respond to player feedback, Marathon could become a staple in the extraction-shooter space.
