With the launch of Season 2 in Marathon, Bungie is giving players more details on what they can expect to find as well as the first of two PvE-style game modes. After a hot start at launch, Marathon has seemingly cooled off a bit, with reports indicating that Bungie’s extraction shooter has fallen short of expectations. In an effort to kickstart things, Season 2 is introducing some potentially game-changing elements.

To Bungie’s credit, the studio has been highly responsive to player feedback, introducing changes and other enhancements at a much quicker pace throughout Season 1. However, the launch wasn’t perfect, as highlighted by Marathon game director Joe Ziegler in a state-of-the-game blog post. Ziegler revealed what the team learned from launch, how they plan to address player complaints, as well as where Marathon is going in the future. The start of that journey has finally arrived as Season 2 is now available for players.

‘Speak With Your Wallet’ Marathon Actor Addresses Online Hate Following Destiny 2 News

A Marathon actor speaks out about the backlash the game is receiving on social media following the news of Destiny 2’s final update.

While the new season means Marathon players are experiencing an account wipe and losing currently held schemas, credits, vault content, and more, Season 2 Nightfall is adding a wealth of new content to explore, like The Cradle, a new runner shell, as well as night variant of Dire Marsh. However, Season 2 also brings the first of two PvE style game modes that flips the script on what players will be experiencing.

In a new blog post, Bungie revealed the new experimental PvE game mode called Sponsored Survival, which runs for a limited time between June 2–9. This mode features a single crew infiltrating the Night Marsh map and dealing with an expanded presence of UESC enemies patrolling the map. However, things take a turn after a certain period of time as Rook players will start to backfill the map to begin their own scavenging. While it isn’t full-blown teams of other players suddenly arriving, adding Rooks into the mix does add an element of tension to the map as players have a limited amount of time to exfil. It’s almost an asymmetrical-style mode that’s reminiscent of Destiny 2‘s Gambit where the Rooks suddenly act as invaders to the crew’s normal PvE activity.

While the mode is only around for a week, Bungie confirmed that player data and feedback from these test modes will help the studio shape future experiences. The blog also reminded players that a full PvE experimental mode is still planned for later in Season 2, as well as a potential PvP-only game mode. Either way, Bungie plans to keep testing the waters to see what sticks, so players will want to stay tuned.

While Marathon is about to kick off its second season, fans of Bungie’s other title are less than thrilled at the extraction shooter. Destiny 2 is releasing its final live-service update on June 9, drawing plenty of ire from the community, many of which are laying the blame at the feet of Marathon. As players attempt to try and find ways to save the Destiny franchise, it appears that Sony is putting all of its eggs in Marathon‘s basket, as the development team expands to try and strengthen the appeal of Marathon going forward.
