In advance of the mid-season update later this month, Bungie gives Marathon players a tease of some big changes, including some tweaks coming to the Recon shell. Since it launched in March, Bungie has continued to lean into the live-service nature of Marathon, releasing new content like the Cryo Archive endgame map as well as a constant barrage of updates. In fact, the studio has even tested new features with players, such as the Duos mode, which wasn’t available at launch.
While Bungie has plenty of experience in the live service space with 10 years of support for the Destiny franchise, it appears that many of the lessons learned during that time have been applied to Marathon‘s benefit. Bungie has been pretty reactive with its updates, listening to the community and making rapid changes based on that. For example, Marathon‘s Ranked and Cryo Archive schedule was adjusted, so players wouldn’t have to pick or choose which one to play, considering both modes are available for a limited time each week. Instead of both appearing on weekend, Bungie separated the two, with Ranked appearing in the first part of each week, followed by Cryo Archive returning in the second half. Along with these quick changes, Bungie is planning to launch a major mid-season update later this month.
Marathon Reveals Patch Notes for March 31 Update
Bungie releases a new update for Marathon, continuing to address various issues, adjusting gameplay, and applying a movement nerf to the Thief shell.
Marathon Teases Major MId-Season Update Changes
According to Bungie’s seasonal plans for Marathon, players are nearing the halfway point. Season 1, known as DEATH IS THE FIRST STEP, is set to run through June, and similar to how Bungie handled seasonal content in Destiny 2, the studio is planning a big mid-season update. While Bungie isn’t sharing the full patch notes for Update 1.0.6 quite yet, the studio has begun to tease out parts of it to give players a heads-up. In this case, the Marathon Development Team account revealed some upcoming changes to the Recon shell.
The Recon Shell in Marathon serves as the game’s information specialist, able to use abilities like Echo to pulse the nearby area to ping potential danger from other players. Not only that, the shell can see footstep trails, as well as use a tracker drone to further annoy enemy players. Inside of Update 1.0.6, Bungie is planning to make a few changes to these abilities, highlighting a buff to the drone that makes it a bit more aggressive thanks to an improved tracking strength as well as the ability to find a new target to track if it can’t reach its current one. In addition, the Echo Pulse will now distinguish between players and UESC AI enemies. Not only that, the Echo Pulse will have reduced visibility to enemy players. Alternatively, if an enemy player manages to use a signal jammer before getting hit by the pulse, they’ll show up as a UESC instead, helping to disguise themselves.

The updates and support won’t be stopping anytime soon, if Bungie has its way. Despite reports that Marathon may not have become quite the smash hit that Sony was hoping for, Bungie has committed to “many years of steady improvements” for Marathon. Players have already seen that commitment first hand with the steady updates and fixes Marathon has already gotten based on player feedback, so as long as Sony allows it, players should expect a constant stream of content. After committing to seasonal wipes, typical for most extraction shooters, Bungie is likely hoping that that sense of starting new and a refreshed game world will be a big draw for players, on top of the new shells, enemies, events, and maps that will continue to be released over time.
