Marvel Rivals Season 8 is just around the corner, and developer NetEase Games has revealed two new characters that will be joining the roster: Devil Dinosaur and Cyclops. Since launching in late 2024, Marvel Rivals has built a huge roster of playable characters spanning the Marvel multiverse. The game includes iconic favorites like Spider-Man, Captain America, and Iron Man, but also some more obscure heroes, such as Jeff the Land Shark and Elsa Bloodstone.
Marvel Rivals immediately found a lot of success, in large part due to player dissatisfaction with Overwatch. The two games share a lot of similarities, and many fans of the latter found a lot to enjoy in Marvel Rivals. Both games are shooters with big playable rosters, but NetEase wants Marvel Rivals to move beyond 6v6 gameplay. The developers have been trying to offer more experiences, including PvE modes. The idea being that the game could appeal to Marvel fans beyond those looking for a PvP experience.

The current status of Insomniac’s leaked Venom spin-off game for PlayStation 5 is unclear after a pair of contradictory updates.
Marvel Rivals Season 8’s New Additions
When Marvel Rivals Season 8 begins on May 15, Devil Dinosaur will be added as a playable character. Created by Jack Kirby in 1978, Devil Dinosaur has been around for decades. The character got a bigger push starting in 2015, and since then, Devil Dinosaur has appeared in games like Marvel Snap. Over the last decade, Devil Dinosaur has been inseparable from his partner, Moon Girl. Lunella Lafayette won’t be playable in Marvel Rivals alongside her dino buddy, but she will have a role to play in the narrative for Season 8. The season is titled “Sins of Alchemax,” and the evil corporation has taken Moon Girl hostage.

Cyclops has been rumored for Marvel Rivals for a while now, and the iconic X-Man has now been confirmed by NetEase. Like Moon Girl, Cyclops has been taken hostage by Alchemax. The company appears to be using the optic blasts of Scott Summers to power its Chronovium. That means players shouldn’t expect to see him playable until Season 8.5, when he’ll presumably be rescued. As one of the oldest X-Men, Scott’s addition to the game is long overdue, especially since so many other members of the team are on the roster.
Devil Dinosaur will be a Vanguard in the game, and players will use his big teeth to take a bite out of the competition. The character will have a bleeding effect on opposing players, and Devil Dinosaur’s Ultimate will result in the character trampling over enemies on the battlefield. Marvel Rivals Team-Ups allow players to combine their abilities, and while Devil Dinosaur’s normal partner isn’t playable, he will have someone else to work with. The Primal Punishment Team-Up allows the Punisher to ride on Devil Dinosaur’s back, which results in damage reduction for Frank Castle, and shared healing.

Nothing has been revealed about how Cyclops will play in Marvel Rivals just yet, but players can expect more information over the coming weeks. In addition to the new characters, Marvel Rivals will be adding a new map, and several balance changes. Balance changes are often a source of controversy for online multiplayer games, but it remains to be seen how players will react to some of the character changes being made. Thankfully, fans won’t have to wait much longer to see how things turn out.
