It’s a good time to be a Spider-Man fan, and if one stat proves it, it’s the number of people currently playing Marvel’s Spider-Man 2—a nearly three-year-old game. That’s not shade at Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, either, as most single-player games lose out on concurrent player counts over the years.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is divisive among some fans for various tropes and story choices, but it’s always been a solid game. It’s also the most recent game to do any sort of webswinging, which is an iconic fantasy associated with every iteration of Spider-Man. As GameRant wrote in its 9/10 Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 review, “Even with some flaws, Spider-Man 2 is still a spectacular experience and the best entry in Insomniac’s Spider-Man game universe to date. It delivers everything hardcore Spider-Man fans would want, with breathtaking battles against some of the hero’s most iconic villains, and a gorgeous open-world New York City to experience it all in.”

Spider-Man 2 Gets Huge Player Spike

That holds true for everyone checking it out on the heels of Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s release, which, alongside other factors, has seen the PC version of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 hit with a player spike of at least 300%. As pointed out by gaming news account Hazzador, Spider-Man 2 is #6 in the top 10 best-selling Steam games (global) right now. It is only topped by brand-new co-op game Big Walk, the Steam Machine, and evergreen legends like Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and Cyberpunk 2077. The end result has been an increase in players on Steam, too.

Spider-Man 2 peaked at launch with 28,000 players on Steam, which is noteworthy because that was well after it released on PS5. It settled into a healthy, understandable ~3,000 players at given moments between now and then (with random spikes to 5-6K at times), and as of this writing, it has hit a new peak for the year of 13,000K+, or a player increase of over 300%. And the important context here is that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is definitely more popular on PS5, where the increase in sales or number is likely similar, if not more than, what’s happening with Steam.

It’s worth noting that developer Insomniac Games also encouraged this itself, however subtly. Insomniac recently added two new suits to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, with one based on Tom Holland’s new suit in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the other based on Spider-Man’s suit in Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. The former, especially, lets players live out the webswinging fantasy of the best Spider-Man to date (though Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are no slouches either).

It remains to be seen how long this surge lasts, but given that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is breaking records at the box office, it could continue sending plenty of players flocking back to Spider-Man 2 as well.
