Creative director Marcus Smith provides more details on Marvel’s Wolverine, confirming the universe that the game takes place in as well as if Spider-Man will show up in some capacity during the campaign. As the September launch date approaches, Insomniac has finally pulled back the curtain on Marvel’s Wolverine with a big showcase during Sony’s State of Play.

After a period of silence, many fans believed that Wolverine would be one of the big games featured at Sony’s showcase. Alongside God of War Laufey, Control Resonant, Until Dawn 2, and others, Marvel’s Wolverine showcased brand-new gameplay that again showcased how brutal and violent the combat is going to be. Teaming up with Jean Grey in one segment, the duo sliced through cybernetically enhanced soldiers called the Reavers as they sought to free captured mutants including the Morlock known as Leech. The end of the segment also revealed more characters that are set to appear, like Omega Red, Mystique, and the first look at Sabertooth.

Wolverine PS5 Game Will Let You Censor It

Marvel’s Wolverine developer Insomniac Games confirms the upcoming PS5 title will offer players an option to censor one noticeable aspect of it.

Marvel’s Wolverine and Spider-Man Share a Universe Together

Following the extended gameplay reveal of Marvel’s Wolverine, creative director Marcus Smith revealed new details about the game in an accompanying interview. Specifically, Smith did confirm that Marvel’s Wolverine exists in the 1048 Marvel Universe, which is essentially Insomniac’s game universe for these characters. So yes, Wolverine does exist in the same universe as both of Insomniac’s previous Spider-Man games, something which has been talked about previously. However, there have been a lot of links between the characters, naturally making fans believe that there could be more than a few crossovers or cameos to come.

Unfortunately, it seems like that isn’t really in the cards. When asked about the possibility of Spider-Man making an appearance in this shared world, Smith shot down those theories. He outright confirmed that Spider-Man won’t be making an appearance in Marvel’s Wolverine, but it does stand to reason that Insomniac’s Easter egg track record will remain intact, so fans will have plenty to keep an eye out for most likely.

In addition to the new gameplay segment, Marvel’s Wolverine also confirmed its pre-order bonuses and deluxe edition content. For those who opt to pre-order the game before September 15, they’ll earn Logan’s Classic Brown suit, reflective claws, 1 technique point to spend, and then 4 PSN avatars. The Digital Deluxe version of the game ups the ante a bit more by offering 5 additional exclusive suits including Savage Wolverine, along with 3 additional technique points, and 5 exclusive customizable claw options.

While fans also got their first look at Sabertooth inside the game, the encounter may not play out like many would have predicted. While Wolverine and Sabertooth remain fierce rivals, even in this game’s universe, game director Mike Daly confirmed that the two would be reluctantly teaming up in this one. While most likely thought Sabertooth would be the villain, if not the main point of conflict, that won’t be the case, though Daly did admit that the partnership will be more competitive and hostile than it would be with another character like Jean Grey. It’s also possible that the two could go head-to-head with one another at some point in the story, though for now, they appear to be reluctant partners in a world that continues to not know about mutants.
