Final Fantasy 9 remains one of the most beloved entries in Square Enix’s long-running RPG franchise, and more than 25 years after its original release, there’s still plenty of demand for anything related to the game. Final Fantasy 9 returned to the series’ fantasy roots after the more futuristic settings of its immediate predecessors. Since its release, it has maintained a dedicated following, with many fans still hoping Square Enix will eventually develop a Final Fantasy 9 remake.
Of course, much of the conversation surrounding Final Fantasy 9 has revolved around the possibility of a remake, particularly as Square Enix continues revisiting older entries in the franchise. Although fans have spent years discussing what a modern version of Gaia might look like, they still appreciate the classic PlayStation game. Fortunately, Square Enix hasn’t forgotten about the OG Final Fantasy 9, and another release celebrating the game is now available.
Square Enix Announces and Releases Wave 2 of Final Fantasy 9: Melodies of Life
Square Enix has announced and released a new wave of its Final Fantasy 9 Melodies of Life music box, available now for $25.99 through the company’s official North American store. Listed as Wave 2, the collectible plays “Melodies of Life,” the iconic song associated with Zidane and Garnet’s romance. The music box’s front features silhouettes of Zidane and Garnet, further paying tribute to the relationship at the heart of Final Fantasy 9. It’s a relatively affordable collectible, especially compared to some of the more elaborate statues and figures Square Enix has released over the years.

The Final Fantasy 9 music box is also relatively small, measuring approximately 2.36 inches tall, 2.09 inches wide, and 1.57 inches deep. Its design is intentionally simple, with Square Enix explaining that the imagery used throughout its music box collection is inspired by scenes associated with the featured songs. The music box is currently listed as available now, meaning interested collectors don’t have to wait for a future release date.
This isn’t the only Final Fantasy 9 music box Square Enix has released, either. The company’s store also features versions celebrating “Not Alone,” which depicts Zidane alongside his companions, and “Roses of May,” featuring Beatrix. Beyond Final Fantasy 9, other Square Enix games like Chrono Trigger have received their own music boxes. Each offers a different way to revisit some of Square Enix’s most memorable soundtracks.
As for the future of Final Fantasy 9, fans are still waiting to see whether Square Enix has any bigger plans for the classic RPG. A full remake would undoubtedly generate considerably more excitement than another collectible, but the continued release of merchandise demonstrates just how enduring the classic title has become. In the meantime, the new “Melodies of Life” music box gives longtime fans another way to celebrate one of the most recognizable songs in Final Fantasy 9, without having to spend hundreds of dollars on a collector’s item.
