Fans that pre-ordered the special edition of Metroid Ravenous have been disappointed to discover that one retailer has canceled several purchases. Metroid Ravenous is a direct sequel to Metroid Dread, serving as the next entry in the 2D series. Like that game, Metroid Ravenous is being developed by the independent Spanish studio MercurySteam. The developer’s first Metroid game was released on 3DS in 2017, and MercurySteam has been closely associated with the series ever since.
Metroid Ravenous was announced during a recent Nintendo Direct, and it should be the first major Switch 2 game of 2027. The title will kick off what should be a strong first-party lineup for the system next year. In addition to Metroid Ravenous, Nintendo will publish Xenoblade Genesis, Kirby and the World Beyond, and Pokemon Winds and Waves in 2027.
Metroid Ravenous Special Edition Pre-Orders Canceled
Nintendo revealed a special edition of Metroid Ravenous following the game’s initial announcement, which will include a SteelBook and an exclusive amiibo. The special edition has been quickly selling out at multiple retailers, and fans have been frustrated to discover that one is canceling pre-orders that were already placed. According to a report from Nintendo Life, the UK retailer Very has canceled several pre-orders. It’s unclear if this is a case of one specific retailer taking more pre-orders than it can fulfill, or if other retailers might also see supply issues.

The exclusive amiibo included in the special edition features Samus in her Metroid suit. On top of the special edition, the launch of Metroid Ravenous will be accompanied by two additional amiibo that are being sold separately. One amiibo recreates the appearance of Samus in the armor that appears on the cover of the game. The other amiibo is based on one of the franchise’s iconic Chozo statues. Nintendo has revealed a number of new figures lately, including amiibo based on the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake. There are also upcoming amiibo based on Kirby Air Riders, as well.
Nintendo has made a habit of releasing special editions for its games recently. In addition to Metroid Ravenous, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave also received a special edition filled with extras. The Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake isn’t getting one, but Nintendo is offering multiple extras, including a new Pro Controller design, and a special version of the Switch 2 console. These types of extras are designed to appeal to the most hardcore fans, rather than more casual players. Fans that don’t care about owning anything beyond the games, however, can always stick with the standard copies.
The release of Metroid Ravenous comes just over a year after the arrival of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. According to Nintendo’s Metroid timeline, the events in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond take place prior to those in Metroid Fusion and Metroid Dread. From everything revealed thus far, Metroid Ravenous appears to be the newest story in the canonical saga of Samus, placing it after everything that came before. That should add some dramatic tension to the story, as the character battles for survival against some new enemies. The trailer teases some major new opponents, and Nintendo will likely reveal more in the lead-up to the game’s launch on January 28.
