A very clever Minecraft player has figured out how to use the floatater block to create an impressive redstone crop farm. While the floatater was only added to Minecraft as an April Fools’ Day joke, players are still finding incredible uses for the block.
Since it was first added to the game many years ago, redstone has been essential to many incredible Minecraft builds. It’s a mechanic with an incredible amount of complexity, and only very few players know how to use it to its full potential. Some use it in-game for very basic uses, such as creating automatic doors. However, others figure out far more complex uses for the item – one Minecraft player even built a playable Tetris using redstone. It seems like there’s no end to the potential of redstone, and these types of amazing creations will continue from the community for years to come yet.

Redditor David_Umann shared their incredibly useful Minecraft redstone contraption with the game’s community online – a farm that makes use of the April Fools’ Day floatater block to pick up four large sections of grown crops, and drop them into a body of water in the center of the area. Only one piece of redstone is activated to begin the harvesting, making this one of the most efficient ways to farm crops in Minecraft. While it may take a decent amount of set-up time, it would certainly save a lot of time in the long run.

Many in the thread took the opportunity to hope the floatater becomes a permanent addition to the game, with one player claiming, “please for the love of god they need to add this to vanilla.” It’s true that Minecraft players are building incredible things with the floatater, and it would be a shame for Mojang to restrict it to an April Fools’ Day joke, albeit an impressive one. The studio has yet to reveal its plans for the block going forward, but it certainly would be a worthy addition to Minecraft if it sticks around.
Developer Mojang continues to support Minecraft with new content, over 12 years since its initial launch date. This is a big part of why the game retains such a dedicated audience – it always feels fresh, even for older players of the game. Recently, Mojang revealed Ominous Trials for Minecraft, which will be fully released as part of the upcoming 1.21 update. Considering the fact that a Minecraft sequel would be a guaranteed hit, Mojang should be applauded for its ongoing commitment to the original game.
