Eighteen years after its debut in Call of Duty: World at War, the original Zombies remains one of the series’ most beloved modes, and a new game on Steam called Milo now wants to recreate that same nostalgic feeling. Milo is set to enter Steam’s early access program in October, but it has already shown immense potential to satisfy fans of classic CoD Zombies through its free playable demo.

Milo is a solo-dev project and, in the words of developer Spencer Sharp, it started as a “love letter to classic CoD Zombies.” It is no secret that Call of Duty games have taken the Zombies mode in a new direction, with more recent installments leaning heavily into fantasy and science-fiction elements. Milo, on the other hand, strips away these newer additions and returns to the fundamental rush of fighting hordes of zombies. And the result looks like something that could put a smile on the faces of longtime CoD Zombies fans.

Milo Is Basically a Return to Nazi Zombies with a Twist

  • Genre: Co-Op, Zombies, FPS, Survival, PvE
  • Developer: Rat Cream Games
  • EA Release Date: October 29, 2026

Set across World War 2-inspired maps, Milo channels Nacht der Untoten, or Night of the Undead, the first-ever Zombies map in a Call of Duty game. But it is not a mere copycat. Milo introduces a couple of interesting new mechanics, the most notable of which is rats. The protagonist is seemingly accompanied by a mischief of rats that can eat the bodies of dead zombies and drop rewards. Milo also features a basketball minigame that players can interact with between rounds, earning points to unlock CoD Zombies-style augments and power-ups.

While Milo is still a work in progress, its demo and trailers have already showcased some of its central mechanics. In each round, players are ambushed by hordes of enemies attacking from different directions. Killing zombies rewards players with points and tickets, which can be used to unlock wall-mounted weapons and purchase new upgrades from a vending machine. Every few rounds, players are also presented with side quests or challenges, such as eliminating zombies in a specific order, which grant additional rewards.

Milo Is Built with Co-Op in Mind

Fans of co-op zombie games might be interested to know that Milo will feature a split-screen mode, though it will not be available with the early access release. At launch, Milo will support four-player co-op and more than 12 World War 2-era weapons, including the M1 Garand.

Developer Spencer Sharp is also working on two new maps, the Oil Rig and Aqaba, as well as new zombie variants. The rat companions will also receive an overhaul, with options to get them new skins and expand their mechanics. A new device seemingly inspired by CoD Zombies‘ GobbleGum Machine will also be added, allowing players to unlock new perks such as Insta-Kill and Infinite Ammo. That said, there is no firm timeline for these updates, and it remains to be seen how development will proceed once Milo launches on Steam after five years of development.

The upcoming features mentioned in this report are based on Milo‘s official roadmap, but they remain subject to change and may differ from those in the final game.
