New Dungeons & Dragons Book Has a Special Baldur’s Gate 3 Easter Egg

The newest official sourcebook for Dungeons and Dragons contains some interesting details about the canon fate of one particularly beloved cast member from Baldur’s Gate 3. The most recent official material for the tabletop RPG serves as a love letter to one of the franchise’s most successful video games ever, with Astarion playing the star of “Astarion’s Book of Hunger.” The digital-only Dungeons and Dragons supplement puts the focus on one of Baldur’s Gate 3‘s most popular characters, with a storyline and new content centered around the vampire rogue Astarion. However, another character reportedly makes their own surprising appearance.

Of the wide cast of characters featured in Baldur’s Gate 3, Karlach easily became one of the most popular members of the game’s main party. The former champion of Zariel is introduced early into Baldur’s Gate 3, with fans first able to recruit her along the Risen Road during the game’s Act One. Karlach serves as the party’s main Barbarian and players choosing to engage more with Karlach can learn about her time spent unwillingly fighting as a soldier in the Blood Warl. Now, fans are getting a better idea about Karlach’s official fate following Baldur’s Gate 3.

New Dungeons and Dragons Book Contains Karlach Easter Egg

Dungeons and Dragons‘ brand-new “Astarion’s Book of Hunger” digital supplement contains some surprise updates about Karlach after Baldur’s Gate 3. According to the book, Karlach can be found within the city of Baldur’s Gate in the year 1501 DR within the events of the story presented in the new “Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun” book. Karlach’s presence in the city suggests that Karlach has somehow found a way to fix her Infernal Engine, with one ending seeing Karlach returns to Avernus until a cure is found. Baldur’s Gate 3‘s epilogue also hinted towards a potential cure for Karlach’s engine.

Karlach’s inclusion in Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun serves as another official confirmation on the “canon” ending to Baldur’s Gate 3. Larian Studios includes a wide variety of different endings within the game for its different characters, allowing fans the chance to dictate how the game ends with each different playthrough. As the title suggests, Astarion’s Book of Hunger also includes a plethora of finer details about Astarion within the digital supplement, including solidifying his birth and death dates and more details about his backstory.

Dungeons and Dragons Hints at New Baldur's Gate Content in Heroes of Faerun

Dungeons and Dragons‘ newest sourcebook includes plenty more for players to dive into beyond its Baldur’s Gate content. Dungeons and Dragons‘ 2024 edition will be adding eight new subclasses to the game with the newest book, including a mix of new and returning classes from D&D‘s “fifth edition.” Wizards of the Coast has also been working on new classes through its “Unearthed Arcana” supplemental material, testing classes like the Psion and the Artificer among others. D&D‘s new books should have lots to offer for both longtime fans and Baldur’s Gate lovers.
