Gamers eager to play Final Fantasy 7 Revelation on the Switch 2 have reason to celebrate, because the game just recently got an extensive demo on the console at this year’s Paris Game Week. The gameplay preview showcased around 30 minutes of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation footage, igniting even more hype for the long-awaited finale to Square Enix’s ambitious remake trilogy. As exciting as the gameplay preview is, the one glaring issue with the demo is that it only features footage recorded in docked mode.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation on the Switch 2 is a big moment for the console. Nintendo has been on a huge roll lately with its wave of major third-party releases, and Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is the first entry in the trilogy that will launch on day one for the console instead of needing a post-launch port. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is another opportunity for the Switch 2 to prove itself as a console that can compete with the likes of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, so the lack of handheld footage capture is shocking.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation on the Switch 2 Looks Impressive, But Handheld Mode Will be the Real Test

The Switch 2 is Nintendo’s most powerful hardware yet, and the number of third-party games that have come to the console make it a strong competitor against the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Nintendo has had no issue catering to its core fan base, but it has also largely stayed within its own bubble and avoided getting into the “console wars.” The Switch 2 is changing things, though, making now a pretty exciting time to be a Nintendo fan. Third-party Switch 2 games like Cyberpunk 2077, Resident Evil Requiem, and the recently released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 demonstrate what a powerhouse it is. The console still lags behind Sony and Xbox’s offerings when it comes to graphics and overall performance, but that hasn’t stopped Nintendo’s third-party efforts.

The Switch 2’s Handheld Mode Is the Console’s Biggest Selling Point

Nintendo’s product might not be as powerful as the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, but it has the benefit of doubling as a handheld console while the other two are stuck as home-only products. The Final Fantasy 7 remake games can be taken anywhere Switch 2 owners desire, so how the game performs undocked is super important for the final chapter’s success on the console.

Docked footage isn’t enough to fully sell Final Fantasy 7 Revelation‘s Switch 2 performance. Fans need to know that the game will still offer a solid experience when playing on a plane or out and about at a coffee shop. Out of all the Final Fantasy 7 Revelation details that have been revealed so far, the Switch 2 gameplay is one of the most exciting. Nintendo hopefully has more planned in the future, though.

When it comes to handheld game consoles, the only other current-gen products that offer a similar experience are the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally and the Steam Deck, and their stats don’t even come close to the Nintendo Switch 2 sales numbers. Alongside the impressive third-party lineup, the Switch 2 also has the benefit of Nintendo’s first-party exclusives, making it the more compelling handheld. The third-party roster might be stronger at the moment, but upcoming releases like the Ocarina of Time remake are only going to make the Switch 2 even more enticing.

Square Enix and Nintendo Still Have Time to Convince Fans That Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Is Best on the Switch 2

The Final Fantasy 7 Revelation release date is slated for April, so there is still plenty of time for Nintendo and Square Enix to release a gameplay demo that is completely captured from undocked footage. It’s unknown if there are any actual plans for either company to showcase undocked gameplay, but it would definitely be a good call. No one wants to buy a game specifically to be played on the go only for it to run poorly.

One of the main aspects of the game that would make it even better in the Switch 2’s undocked mode is Final Fantasy 7 Revelation‘s open world. There have been multiple teases about how much larger the game’s world is going to be compared to the past two entries, and handheld consoles add to that sense of adventure. Playing an open-world game while also traveling from Point A to Point B makes it a more immersive experience, and the Switch 2 can hopefully succeed at that with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation‘s undocked performance. Only time will tell if Square Enix unveils undocked footage, but it’s in the game’s best interest.
