A new free-to-play MLB The Show game is set to launch later this year. Since its launch in 2006, MLB The Show has become the premier baseball franchise in gaming and has showcased a steady level of consistency in two decades on the market. While initially a PlayStation console exclusive for its first 15 games, publisher Sony and developer San Diego Studio have since brought the franchise to Xbox and Nintendo platforms following a deal with Major League Baseball.
Even though newer titles have not been stunning reinventions of the formula, the franchise has continued to hit for a solid batting average thanks to its polished core gameplay. Still, MLB The Show is an annual franchise, and its lead developers don’t have much time to wait following the release of a new game. Even though the latest installment, MLB The Show 26, is only a little over a month old, the development team at San Diego Studio is already looking toward the franchise’s future and searching for new pitches to add to its arsenal.

Free-to-Play MLB The Show Mobile Receives New Trailer
Sony has just released the latest trailer for the free-to-play MLB The Show Mobile, the first mobile phone-based entry in the long-running baseball franchise. The game is being developed in-house at San Diego Studio, and while it is currently available in several territories, no official word was given on its US release date. However, players can pre-register for the game on the App Store and Google Play, and San Diego Studio is running an event where pre-registrants can receive weekly rewards leading up to release, including an 85 Diamond Aaron Judge 2017 Rookie card.

Based on the footage showcased in the trailer, this new game will be heavily centered around MLB The Show’s ever-popular Diamond Dynasty mode, where players collect cards and build their own fantasy baseball team. Naturally, the gameplay has been simplified in the transition from consoles to mobile devices, with greater emphasis on tap-based controls and timing meters. Still, players will control batting and pitching placements, and will have to make careful decisions regarding fielding and base running.
MLB The Show Mobile looks to be an exciting prospect for new and longtime baseball fans, and it could be a great way to get new fans into the series. MLB The Show 26 is a full-priced $70 game, and while previous entries were offered through subscription services, MLB The Show no longer arrives on Xbox Game Pass. Thus, a free-to-play variation of the franchise offers an entry-level experience for fans who may not be willing to shell out the money for another yearly sports title.

MLB The Show Mobile’s impending release is also fascinating, as among a wave of changes, Sony laid off around 50 developers in its mobile game department. Even though Sony may be quietly exiting the mobile space, it appears this new MLB The Show title is one of the games to survive the storm. Time will tell if MLB The Show Mobile translates the long-running baseball franchise’s excellence to mobile devices well and proves to be a satisfying title for baseball fans.
