A new official Middle-earth release for the Switch 2 has been confirmed for September 30, bringing Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War to Nintendo hardware for the first time. Middle-earth: Shadow of War is Monolith Productions’ open-world action sequel built around Talion’s war against Sauron’s forces and the beloved Nemesis System that put the Shadow series on the map.

The widely celebrated Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor originally launched in 2014, with Middle-earth: Shadow of War following in 2017. Monolith’s Shadow franchise follows Ranger Talion and the spirit of Celebrimbor as they wage war against Sauron’s armies between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, with Shadow of War bringing Talion’s story to a close. The series is best known for the Nemesis System, which turns recurring Orc enemies into personalized rivals that evolve based on the player’s encounters with them. Following Monolith Productions’ closure in 2025, the future of the Shadow series and the Nemesis System has been in question.

Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War Are Coming to Switch 2

Aspyr has now officially announced the Middle-earth: Shadow Bundle for Nintendo Switch 2, with the collection launching on September 30, 2026. It includes Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition and Middle-earth: Shadow of War Definitive Edition, though both games will also be available separately. Shadow of Mordor is priced at $19.99, Shadow of War at $49.99, and the complete bundle at $69.99. All three options are also currently available at a 50% pre-order discount, dropping the entire collection to $34.99 ahead of launch. The release adds two more stand-out titles to the growing library of Nintendo Switch 2 games, while also bringing Shadow of Mordor to Nintendo exactly 12 years after it first launched on September 30, 2014.

Notably, Nintendo Switch 2 owners can finally see what the Nemesis System is all about. The unique mechanic remains popular with fans due to how Orc enemies can remember previous battles with Talion and change based on their victories, defeats, strengths, fears, and interactions with the player. Talion can eventually dominate some of those enemies and turn them into allies, while Shadow of War expands the system into full armies and fortress warfare. Players can recruit followers with their own personalities and histories before sending them into assaults against enemy strongholds, making the Nemesis System in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor central to much of the game’s emergent storytelling, with relatively few other games attempting anything comparable.

Both Switch 2 releases also include each game’s major post-launch content. Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition includes Lord of the Hunt, The Bright Lord, additional Warband Missions, bonus Runes, skins, and other Season Pass material. Shadow of War Definitive Edition includes Desolation of Mordor, Blade of Galadriel, the Slaughter Tribe and Outlaw Tribe Nemesis expansions, and the Sword of Dominion bonus weapon. It also includes major changes to Middle-earth: Shadow of War, especially to its online systems. On Switch 2, the Garrison has been adapted to function offline so undeployed Orc followers can still be moved between regions, while Online Conquests, Vendettas, Fight Pits, Chests, and Training Orders will not be available at all.

The announcement followed an unusual rollout, as players first noticed both games appearing in the Switch 2 eShop’s coming-soon section before Aspyr issued its full reveal. That initially led to speculation that the two titles had been quietly announced or even shadowdropped, but the official trailer ultimately confirmed the September 30 release date. The bundle gives Nintendo players their first chance to experience both games and their major expansions on Switch 2, bringing two of the best-known modern Lord of the Rings games to the platform.
