Fans of the Soulslike genre have a promising new game to play on October 13, thanks to the release of Valor Mortis. Valor Mortis is in development at One More Level, the studio that previously made the well-received Ghostrunner games. But while Valor Mortis comfortably fits in the Soulslike genre, it’s doing a lot to help itself stand out compared to the many other Soulslike games on the market.

The vast majority of Soulslike games are third-person action-RPGs, but Valor Mortis uses a first-person perspective instead. Valor Mortis‘ first-person view immediately gives it a unique identity when compared to the other Soulslike games out there, but that’s just one way it’s differentiating itself from the pack. Valor Mortis is set in alternate-history 19th century Europe where players take on the role of a resurrected soldier that died fighting for Napoleon. Players have to fight their way through hordes of undead creatures utilizing weapons appropriate for the time period, like swords and flintlock pistols, along with their ever-growing supernatural abilities.

Valor Mortis Release Date

Valor Mortis‘ gameplay presentations coupled with its unique premise have turned plenty of heads, and soon Soulslike fans will get to see if it lives up to the hype for themselves. Valor Mortis is scheduled to release on Tuesday, October 13 across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Valor Mortis will be releasing at a budget price of $39.99, or fans can pay $59.99 for the Deluxe Edition that guarantees access to a story DLC releasing in 2027, among other goodies. However, it should be pointed out that Soulslike fans don’t even necessarily have to buy the game to play Valor Mortis.

If you are signed up for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, you get instant, day-one access to Valor Mortis. Valor Mortis follows in the footsteps of the recently-released Gears of War: E-Day as one of the biggest new Game Pass Ultimate day one games of October, and it will be available to those on both console and PC. It’s possible that Valor Mortis being a day one Game Pass game will cut into its sales numbers, but the game has generated enough buzz that it should still do just fine among Soulslike fans.

Time will tell how Valor Mortis‘ final product turns out, but what’s been shown so far definitely looks promising. If nothing else, it should prove to be another interesting new game for Soulslike fans to check out. After all, FromSoftware, the genre’s pioneer, only has one new game currently announced, and that game is releasing as a Switch 2 exclusive, meaning many fans are potentially going to be missing out on it.

The Duskbloods is FromSoftware’s next game, and it is scheduled to release at some point before the end of the year for Nintendo Switch 2. The Duskbloods is a PvPvE online multiplayer game, but it definitely seems to retain many elements of the studio’s typical games. Those looking for more traditional, single-player Soulslike experiences can look forward to Valor Mortis and other games that fit the bill in the months and years ahead.
