A brand-new open-world game called Fae & Fauna has been revealed, and it is a cozy pet-collecting adventure set to release on Steam in the first quarter of 2027. What makes Fae & Fauna a specially intriguing game for Steam users is that it features magical cats and dogs that players can have around as companions.
Developed by a small Swedish team known as Aurora Arts, Fae & Fauna packs several life-sim staple mechanics, like crafting, cooking, and mining, into its world. Players in Fae & Fauna will also be able to own a home and decorate it as they wish, along with extensive options to customize their character’s look and outfit. Despite all that, Fae & Fauna is not exactly a life sim game. And it is more accurately described as a creature-collecting RPG with cozy vibes.
Fae & Fauna Officially Announced
- Genre: Creature-Collecting, Open-World, RPG
- Developer: Aurora Arts
- EA Release Date: 2027
The first gameplay trailer for Fae & Fauna revealed its cel-shaded visuals, which might remind some fans of games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The trailer also revealed the most important aspects of the gameplay, including the pets, or Faeons, that players can collect. These pets can accompany players during exploration and help out during combat. Fans of cozy games might be interested to know that Fae & Fauna will also feature romance, allowing players to bond with NPCs and find true love.
Fae & Fauna will also let players create their own pets using magic and chemistry.
The gameplay loop has not been officially detailed, but it appears that players will search the world to collect and study new Faeons. Meanwhile, they will need to explore the open-world map to uncover its secrets. Fae & Fauna will also feature combat, as seen in the gameplay trailer. Players can seemingly use different melee weapons to fight hostile creatures, or Knytt, as the game calls them. Interestingly, Fae & Fauna will also let players create their own pets using magic and chemistry, which could work similarly to how breeding animals works in some cozy life sim games.
Fae & Fauna takes place on a magical island called Saltwick. Players can freely explore the area and interact with NPCs, some of whom work as the island’s shopkeepers and traders, as seen in games like Stardew Valley. In their free time, Fae & Fauna players can bond with their adorable companions, as the game allows them to pet their cats and dogs. According to the developer, the 1.0 version of Fae & Fauna will also feature “deeper Faeon bonding systems.”
Aurora Arts plans to release Fae & Fauna in Steam’s early access program sometime in Q1 2027, and it plans to keep the game in that phase for about two years. Version 1.0 will add new biomes and an expanded story. But it seems the game will also look more and more like a life sim rather than a simple creature-collecting RPG because it will feature even more side activities, such as fishing and bug catching. In the coming months, it will be interesting to see how Fae & Fauna performs commercially and whether it can make a name for itself among all the other cozy games on Steam.
Developer Aurora Arts has explained that the team will try to bring Fae & Fauna to more platforms and possibly consoles once it leaves the early access phase.
