A new open-world game called Petal Runner is like a mix of Stardew Valley and Pokemon, and it allows players to work a digital pet delivery job while living in a cozy town filled with friendly NPCs. Petal Runner has been in development since 2021 and is being made by a small yet talented team that includes YouTuber Brandon James Greer.

In Petal Runner, players take on the role of Cali, a bike rider who delivers HanaPets to people’s doors. HanaPets are Pokemon-like digital animals that come in different varieties and span several generations. Cali has their own digital companion named Kira, a rare Gen-one creature that can talk. While delivering adorable creatures sits at the core of Petal Runner‘s gameplay, it has a lot more to offer, making it comparable to cozy life sim games like Stardew Valley.

Petal Runner’s Cozy Sapphire Valley Has Serious Stardew Valley Vibes

  • Genre: Open-World, RPG, Cozy
  • Developer: Nano Park Studios
  • Publisher: iam8bit Presents
  • Release Date: 2026

Developed by Nano Park Studios, Petal Runner takes place in the pixel-art town of Sapphire Valley, a four-district open-world map that gives off Stardew Valley vibes. Players can talk to the townspeople and get to know more about their lives, which is another similarity between Petal Runner and ConcernedApe’s life simulation. That said, Petal Runner‘s visuals are inspired by Game Boy Color-era games, giving it a limited color palette and a distinct look.

Petal Runner Has Its Own Pokedex

When not delivering digital pets to the people of Sapphire, Cali and Kira can explore the map and discover new creatures. New HanaPet discoveries are then added to Cali’s HanaBase, which is essentially a Pokedex for Petal Runner‘s animals. While the game may not have a thousand creatures like Pokemon games do, it still offers an impressive selection of unique designs. HanaPets also have different variants that must be discovered to complete the HanaBase.

One of the primary gameplay features in Petal Runner is riding a bike as Cali while Kira sits in the back. Developer Nano Park Studios has implemented several features, along with 16-directional animations, to make bike riding feel authentic and cozy at the same time. Besides being a biker, Cali is also a professional technician capable of installing and repairing Leap Cells, special devices that contain HanaPets. The installation process for these devices often involves playing minigames that seem to be inspired by retro games with basic mechanics.

Petal Runner Release Date and Details

Nano Park Studios plans to release Petal Runner in 2026, but an exact date has yet to be confirmed. Luckily, fans of cozy life sim games can currently play the game’s free demo on Steam, which offers a glimpse of Sapphire Valley and introduces some of the base gameplay mechanics, including bike riding. Although the reviews are limited, the Petal Runner demo has a positive rating at the time of writing, and it remains to be seen whether the full release will receive a similar reception.
