PlayStation and Sony have been leaning into live-service games for the past few years, and one of them could be another extraction shooter. The PlayStation live-service push has seen its fair share of highs and lows, and if new leaks are true, heist-focused Fairgames could be the company’s next addition to the extraction shooter genre.

Extraction shooters have gained a lot of attention in recent months. Once ARC Raiders hit the scene, it was clear that the genre could reach a wider audience. Games like Escape From Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown 1896 were some of the main mascots for the genre, but ARC Raiders‘ huge success now makes it seem as though extraction shooters could be the next big industry trend. Sony entered the extraction shooter world last month with Bungie’s Marathon, and it may just be the tip of the iceberg.

The 5 Best Extraction Shooters For Beginners, Ranked

Extraction shooters are relatively new to gamers, but some of the best will help newcomers get ready for what’s next.

These leaks come from documents that were sent to Insider Gaming, and they claim that Fairgames is going to be next in line when it comes to building PlayStation’s extraction shooter resume. According to the documents, Fairgames will include its own extraction mode, so it’s not expected to be a full-blown addition to the genre. In the past, feedback from Fairgames playtesters has reportedly been less than desirable. The game has faced a rocky development cycle in general, but Sony is still investing in the project.

It’s unclear exactly how many game modes Fairgames will have, but the leaked documents claim that the extraction-inspired mode is called “Cargo Heist.” In this mode, players have to allegedly find a vault code to break into a safe, collect cash for upgrades, grab or intercept cargo from the vault, and then that must be brought to an extraction site where the team will wait for a getaway driver. Since “Cargo Heist” might be one mode out of many, it’s going to be interesting to see how it appeals to the larger extraction shooter fan base. Other upcoming heist games like Den of Wolves might present a challenge, especially if the two titles release around the same time.

Fairgames is expected to be free-to-play.

The list of extraction shooter games is growing, but Fairgames potentially opting for a mode instead of completely revolving around the genre might help it in the long run. Although extraction shooters haven’t become as oversaturated as battle royales once were, the competition is already fierce. Marathon‘s player count has struggled to hit the same heights as ARC Raiders, even though many see it as a great extraction title.

Further claims from the leaker say that developer Haven Interactive Studios will be holding another playtest over the upcoming weekend. This could bring forth even more leaks from participants, but only time will tell. Reports about Fairgames and its troubled development have plagued the project, and Haven Interactive Studios founder Jade Raymond even left the company last year. Sony live-service games like Helldivers 2 and Marathon have been successes, but Concord flopping and The Last of Us Online getting canceled alongside a variety of other live-service projects puts Fairgames in a tough position.
