During the recent Nintendo Direct, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam received an official release date of December 10, 2026. When Professor Layton and the New World of Steam launches on December 10, it’ll do so on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, as well as PS5 and PC.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam has already had a rather lengthy road to launch. The next entry in the beloved puzzle game series was first announced all the way back in February 2023, and it received several trailers throughout that same year. Towards the end of 2023, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam was given a 2025 release window, but when that window finally rolled around, the game was nowhere to be found. Finally, in September 2025, developer Level 5 officially announced that the game was being delayed into 2026. In April, Level 5 issued an official statement not only reaffirming Professor Layton and the New World of Steam‘s 2026 release window, but announcing the game was coming to PS5 and PC as well, marking two firsts for the long-running franchise.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is Coming to Nintendo Switch 1 and 2 on December 10, 2026

Over three years after its original announcement, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam finally has a release date of December 10, 2026, and will officially launch for both the original Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2, as well as PlayStation 5 and PC. The most recent Professor Layton and the New World of Steam trailer gave fans an overview of the game’s story and teased just a handful of the upcoming game’s many puzzles, including ones that see players piecing together a steam-powered mech, sorting cargo containers by their weight, and escaping from a labyrinth of spooky monsters.

Making its debut in 2007, the Professor Layton franchise is a series of puzzle adventure games first released on the Nintendo DS. The series can be roughly split into four distinct sections: the original trilogy, a prequel trilogy, two spinoffs, and one crossover game with Ace Attorney. Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is set to be a direct sequel to the original Professor Layton trilogy, with its story taking place a year after the events of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future.

The next mainline Professor Layton entry will begin with young detective Luke Triton inviting the eponymous top-hat-wearing academic to the town of Steam Bison, a mysterious metropolis that seems to thrive on highly advanced steam-powered technology. As detailed in this latest trailer, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam‘s puzzles are being created by a Japanese quiz group known as QuizKnock.

With a release in December, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam should round-out a successful year for the Nintendo Switch and its successor. Along with acclaimed titles like Pokemon Pokopia and Splatoon Raiders that released earlier this year, the Nintendo Switch 2 is set to receive a few more heavy hitters by the end of the year, such as Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, which releases on September 17, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, which is launching on November 5.
