Indie action game Spy Drops, which takes direct inspiration from PlayStation classic Metal Gear Solid, has confirmed its PS5 release date. The title’s PS5 version will officially bring the game to Sony’s ecosystem, giving it a home on the family of consoles where the Metal Gear Solid games got their start.

The Metal Gear Solid series arrived on the first iteration of the PlayStation with a massive bang, rebooting the retro classic Metal Gear series into a 3D, stealth-focused spy thriller. Serving as visionary game creator Hideo Kojima’s flagship series, the franchise has since taken on a life of its own, with five mainline entries along with a number of spin-offs and remakes. A Metal Gear Solid movie was finally confirmed in April 2026, and the directors of 2025’s Final Destination: Bloodlines will be officially bringing the franchise to the big screen for the first time.

Spy Drops, a retro-style stealth action title that’s directly inspired by the original Metal Gear Solid, has announced that it will land on the PlayStation 5 on April 28, 2026. The game was originally released on Steam and Nintendo Switch in July 2025. Spy Drops will also launch on the Xbox Series X/S on the same day as its PS5 release, bringing a host of improvements and gameplay tweaks that have been implemented since the game’s initial launch.

While Konami continues to hint at future Metal Gear Solid remakes, potentially modernizing the look and feel of the original games, Spy Drops features retro, polygonal graphics that are intentionally reminiscent of the original 1998 PS1 classic. The game even features the same color palette as the iconic stealth title, and its isometric gameplay style will feel right at home to fans. Where Spy Drops differs from its inspiration is in its mission structure, which features randomly generated missions designed to feel unique on each playthrough. The game’s story is centered around an eco-terrorist organization attempting to delete the world’s entire library of digital data, severing its connection with technology.

The Steam page for Spy Drops currently shows that the game has Mixed reviews from players, with its community acknowledging a number of changes that have been implemented into the title since it was first launched. These changes include the removal of its controversial AI voice acting, with a team of actual actors replacing the digitally generated vocal performances. The title has also introduced standalone playable missions that can be accessed outside the standard story mode, new camera control options, visual updates, bug fixes, and more, which may help it receive a warmer reception as it releases on more consoles.

Stealth action game fans have more options than ever with the announcement of the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection Vol. 2’s release date, along with 2025’s Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, a remake of the PS2 fan-favorite Metal Gear Solid 3. Despite this, Spy Drops stands as an attempt at an original game in the series’ beloved style, and fans looking for a new title to play that retains the series’ distinct vibe may want to give it a shot.
