Red Dead Redemption fans on PC can download an ambitious updated mod that brings the original game’s quality a lot closer to the high bar set by Red Dead Redemption 2. The original Red Dead Redemption was released in 2010 to widespread critical acclaim, and is comfortably one of the highest-rated games ever made. The open world epic was praised for its engrossing story and characters and brilliantly translating the GTA experience to a western setting. Rockstar Games followed up the original RDR in 2018 with Red Dead Redemption 2, which earned even higher praise.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is nothing short of a technical marvel, with jaw-dropping graphics and an elevated level of realism not found in the original RDR. Naturally, with Red Dead Redemption 2 releasing a whole eight years after the original game, it completely blows the OG out of the water in terms of visuals. The original Red Dead Redemption may never be able to touch its successor when it comes to looks, but a newly updated mod does help bring the two closer in quality.
Reality Redemption Mod is a Game-Changer
BadassBaboon’s impressive Reality Redemption mod is a “total overhaul” of the original Red Dead Redemption on PC. Reality Redemption makes sweeping improvements, improving textures, models, the mini-map, the camera, physics, AI, and more. Fans that download the Reality Redemption mod from Nexus Mods can look forward to improved draw distance, little touches like smoke coming out of gun barrels, and improved sounds. The mod also looks to improve the lore through “custom dialogue and subtitles” and “fixes continuity errors.” The latest update for the mod even adds Arthur Morgan’s iconic hat to the game.

Commenters on a YouTube video showing off the Reality Redemption mod’s new update have gone as far as to call it Red Dead Redemption 1.5. By adding references to Red Dead Redemption 2 protagonist Arthur Morgan and giving the graphics an upgrade, it definitely helps bridge the gap between the OG RDR and Red Dead Redemption 2. It’s not quite what one would get from a full-blown remake if Rockstar ever decided to make one, but it’s certainly a big step forward compared to what’s available officially.
RDR and RDR2 have both set such an incredibly high bar, and it remains to be seen if they will ever be topped. Right now, Rockstar Games is hard at work on Grand Theft Auto 6, which has become the most highly-anticipated new game release of all time. It’s assumed that Rockstar will turn its attention to Red Dead Redemption 3 after GTA 6 is out, but it’s also possible the company will pursue a completely unexpected project. Whatever the case may be, mods like this can help breathe new life into Rockstar’s classic games and make revisiting them that much more worthwhile.
The downside is the Reality Redemption mod is only available to PC gamers, meaning console players are out of luck. Still, the Red Dead Redemption port for modern platforms is pretty solid and a definite improvement over the original itself, even if it doesn’t go quite as far as the Reality Redemption mod.
