A new update for The Sims 4 has caused major problems for players, as the February 3 patch prevented users from opening the game and even led to save data corruption for some users. Developer Maxis intended to release a new update for The Sims 4 this week that included some brand-new content for players to check out, as well as numerous bug fixes and improvements, but the studio mysteriously reversed the update after its release and caused a ton of headaches for players in the process.

Maxis and EA are currently gearing up to release the highly anticipated Royalty & Legacy Expansion Pack for The Sims 4, which will launch for consoles and PC on February 12. The paid DLC will bring new core gameplay mechanics to the popular life sim title, including the ability to create or join powerful Dynasties with new family values, allowing your sim to climb through noble ranks and become a ruler. Players will also be able to check out the new Swordsmanship skill, secret passageways, plenty of new clothing items, and a new world called Ondarion, centered on royal courts and a rich history, with three distinct neighborhoods: Dambele, Verdemar, and Bellacorde.

I am making the most out of The Sims 4’s upcoming Royalty & Legacy Expansion Pack by making my dynasties and royal families riddled with scandal.

The Sims 4’s New February 3 Update Has Caused Major Problems

In preparation for the release of the next Expansion Pack this month, Maxi released a brand-new update for The Sims 4 on February 3. According to the official patch notes, the update introduced new changes to the Family Tree, flared staircases, a new Africana-style filter in Create a Sim, a 4-week-long Lost Legacies event, and more. However, the new patch appears to have caused some pretty severe issues for users. Shortly after update 1.121 was deployed on February 3, Maxis reverted the patch with a second update, restoring the base game to version 1.120.

As reported by SimsCommunity, some users were speculating that the update was reverted as it featured a bug that would prevent players from saving their game. The studio then reversed the update, which caused even more issues for those who had already booted up the game with version 1.121, as it would completely corrupt the game and prevent it from starting. Although Maxis seems to have since fixed the issue, those who are experiencing problems still might need to delete the gameversion.txt file in their Sims 4 documents folder, as this seems to have done the trick for others. For those who didn’t initially update on February 3, the latest update should now be safe to download.

Game-breaking issues with new updates seem to be the new norm when it comes to The Sims 4. And as most players have hundreds of mods and custom content installed, EA and Maxis regularly advise players to back up their Sims 4 save files before downloading and installing new base game updates, as they are regularly known to cause issues with unofficial content. The developer even urged players to create backups prior to the release of this week’s update, as the free patch made alterations to gameplay features that will likely corrupt save files for those who are using mods. Especially ones that tamper with family tree and relationship functionality.

The Sims 4 has been going strong for well over a decade now, and while many were anticipating the new Project Rene from Maxis to be The Sims 5, it looks like that’s no longer the case. Instead, the studio has revealed that Rene is now a mobile game focused on social interactions, presumably through multiplayer elements. The good news, however, is that Maxis did also state that it is working on numerous other experiences within The Sims universe. While that wasn’t outright confirmation that The Sims 5 is in development, it has given fans a glimmer of hope.
