A Steam indie game called Game Quest: The Backlog Battler uses players’ actual data to turn their unplayed or forgotten titles into hideous boss fights. As one of the largest gaming platforms, Steam has over 130 million active monthly players, and its users own one of the most valuable collective video game backlogs of all time.
A 2024 estimation based on public Steam profiles suggested that gamers have probably stockpiled around $19 billion worth of games. This figure is unlikely to be 100% accurate and has not been confirmed by Valve. Still, it reflects a widely known “champagne problem” among gamers: having a massive backlog. Now, an indie developer has turned that very issue into a new game that many players may want to add to their ever-growing Steam libraries.
New Steam Game is Like Diablo Meets ARC Raiders
The new game from a tenured action RPG developer takes the best parts of Diablo and ARC Raiders to create something totally new with a PvPvE focus.
Game Quest Turns Your Unplayed Games into Monsters
In Game Quest: The Backlog Battler, players enter an arena where their least-played games become enemies, with the most expensive titles dealing the highest damage. Described by solo developer Nic Taylor as a hack-and-slash game, Game Quest basically lets players battle their backlogs in intense combat, using their mouse and keyboard as primary weapons. For those curious to try it, a free demo of Game Quest is already available on Steam.
Once the game accesses a user’s Steam library, it begins generating boss fights. It also turns their most-played games into allies in combat. Based on what has been confirmed so far, the goal in Game Quest is to defeat backlog monsters and earn points to climb the leaderboards. After clearing their own backlogs, players can jump into their friends’ lists and take on their unused purchases for an extra challenge.
Players will need to make their “Game Details” on Steam public before loading Game Quest for the first time, so it can fetch their data and generate enemies. According to the developer, they can switch it back to private once the game has successfully loaded for the first time.

The Developer Is Working on Even More Interesting Features
Developer Nic Taylor recently shared in a Steam community post that even more backlog-inspired features are in the works for Game Quest. The solo developer is currently building Act 2, which will introduce ideas like filenames dropping like blood during combat and special enemy types based on the file sizes of games in a player’s backlog. In the current build, high Metacritic scores already turn games into special flying enemies, so it will be interesting to see what larger file sizes evolve into in comparison.
Act 2 is also expected to introduce a new feature where players fight off their wishlisted games on Steam and “travel through the wishlist vortex after killing the boss.” Other ideas planned for the 1.0 version include a new weapon type called Controller, additional power-ups, fresh bosses, and proper endgame content for players who can’t stop beating their unbeaten games.
As of this writing, Game Quest: The Backlog Battler has been wishlisted over 10,000 times, an impressive milestone for an indie Steam game. There is currently no confirmed release date, but the developer is targeting an Early Access launch sometime in 2026.
