Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave takes place in the middle of an apocalyptic event, as the forces of the demonic god Balor have overrun the world. The game’s main protagonist, Eshmel, must travel back five years in time and guide up to four heroes and their allies through the Heroic Games. Players can also choose to go straight to the game’s ending, though Balor will not be an easy foe to take down alone. By completing each hero’s path, Fortune’s Weave players will uncover a branching narrative and gain powerful allies along the way.

Hours before the digital launch of Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, reviews of the game painted a positive picture for interested fans to peruse. Currently, critic scores have the tactical RPG sitting at an 89 on Metacritic and a 90 on OpenCritic, with a critic recommendation rating of 95%. The Metacritic score currently matches Pokemon Pokopia, another first-party Nintendo title launched in 2026. By comparison, Fortune’s Weave‘s Opencritic score of 90 puts it one point higher than Pokopia. Critics stated that Fortune’s Weave builds upon the established tactical strategy gameplay of previous Fire Emblem titles and rewards players who take the time to master it.

Some reviewers noted that Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is not an easy game, as each hero and their forces can become easily overrun. In Giant Bomb’s 8/10 review, Jeff Grubb described using the dense cover in a forest battlefield to hide weaker units while allowing stronger units to sneak up and attack enemies from behind. Despite the enemy commander’s attempts to spawn waves of units, this stealth tactic proved effective in claiming victory. As for the game’s story, VGC’s Dave Aubrey stated in his 10/10 review that each hero’s characteristics stood out from the start. For example, Cai was described as a traditional RPG protagonist who had his reasons for competing in the Heroic Games, while Leda’s quest for vengeance was veiled behind her charms as a dancer.
The initial critic scores for the latest entry in the Fire Emblem franchise put the upcoming strategy game in elite company.
