Obsidian Entertainment’s Josh Sawyer, director of Fallout: New Vegas, commented on a reference to his game made toward the end of the new Fallout Amazon series. Josh Sawyer was formally part of Black Isle Studios as a designer working on the Icewind Dale franchise before he joined up with Obsidian Entertainment in 2005. Most recently, Sawyer directed Pentiment, a 2D historical narrative adventure game which garnered critical praise when it released on Xbox Game Pass in 2022.

Just a few weeks ago, Amazon’s long-awaited Fallout TV series hit Prime Video and is considered one of the best video game adaptations ever made. The show has been such a major success, that the two most recent Fallout titles, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, have seen players returning in droves. The franchise is seeing tons of new fans as the conversation surrounding the show has continued to permeate the internet. Some corners of the fanbase have expressed concern over a particular shot of the Mojave Wasteland, worrying that the show may have retconned Fallout: New Vegas. Franchise director Todd Howard addressed these worries and assured fans that New Vegas is still canon in the Fallout universe.

Fallout Star Responds to Moldaver Fan Theories Following Season 1 Finale

After Fallout’s Season 1 finale, fans wondered: How did Moldaver survive? Actress Sarita Choudhury finally spills the beans in a revealing interview.

In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Josh Sawyer was asked about his feelings regarding New Vegas‘ brief presence in the show, and how he’d feel if Bethesda chose to revisit it, or if any future Fallout project were to impact it. Sawyer responded by saying “…whatever happens with it, I don’t care…My attitude towards properties that I work on, and even characters I create, is that I don’t own any of this stuff. It was never mine. And the thing that I made is what I made.”

Obsidian’s Josh Sawyer Isn’t Concerned About What Happens With Fallout: New Vegas

This may sound strange coming from such an esteemed creative mind in the gaming world, and his stance could cause fans to think there’s bad blood between Sawyer and Bethesda. However, Sawyer stated his reasoning for such a mindset, saying “I don’t feel like it’s healthy for me to be really invested in something I have no control over.”

With Fallout in the air, many fans of the franchise are wishing for Xbox and Bethesda to let Obsidian take Fallout for another spin, as Bethesda Game Studios’ Fallout 5 isn’t expected until about 2030 the earliest. It would be interesting to see whether Josh Sawyer would be up to revisit the Fallout universe, or if he’d choose to continue creating smaller games within Obsidian, such as Pentiment.

Fans should expect to learn more about the fantasy RPG, including its release date, at Xbox’s June showcase. Beyond that, Obsidian is also working on a sequel to its 2019 sci-fi RPG The Outer Worlds, though it’s been several years since any new info has been shared.
