Mamdani’s livestream is not the first time politicians have used platforms like Twitch to reach voters on a more direct basis. Many popular politicians, such as U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have streamed on their own channels on Twitch or guest-starred with other popular streamers like Pokimane and Myth. Ocasio-Cortez also notably went live alongside Minnesota governor Tim Walz during his run for vice president in the 2024 presidential campaign, playing Madden NFL 25 with the VP candidate. Both leading presidential candidates also used Twitch frequently during the election cycle, with Kamala Harris and Donald Trump streaming press conferences and rallies.
Streaming sites like Twitch and YouTube have been used as political channels more than ever in recent years. Twitch has a separate content category devoted to streams centering on politics, with Twitch even adding warning labels for politically-charged content during the 2024 election. The rise in political discussion on livestreaming platforms has also led to many popular streamers sharing their own political beliefs and stances on-stream, with Asmongold and Hasan Piker among the most notable.

The changing landscape of Twitch has seen big shifts in company policy as well. The site saw major controversy around the use of viewbots by some of its biggest streamers, with even a Twitch manager claiming that more streamers should be viewbotting. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy even revealed a major change to Twitch aimed at combatting viewbotting in early May, placing caps on concurrent viewer counts for streamers who have been caught viewbotting. Changes to Twitch’s policies and content have seen the platform continue to grow and evolve with each passing year.
