A new release tied to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is set to release in October, but most fans of the franchise will be missing out. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was originally released in 2006 for the Nintendo Wii as a launch title, and then came to the GameCube a couple of weeks later. Nintendo eventually made an HD remaster of the game for the Wii U, but it remains one of the few Zelda games that you can’t play on modern hardware.
Despite persistent leaks and rumors for years, Nintendo has yet to bring the HD version of Twilight Princess to the Nintendo Switch. Many fans were counting on the recent Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct to finally announce the long-awaited port, but that came and went with no mention of Twilight Princess. While fans wait for more information on a possible Twilight Princess HD port, there is at least some proof that Nintendo hasn’t forgotten about the game.
Zelda: Twilight Princess and 11 Other Games Are Getting Historical Charms
Takara Tomy is releasing a set of historical charms based on The Legend of Zelda franchise, with Twilight Princess included. As reported by Siliconera, the Zelda historical charms will be available in Japan gachapon machines starting October 2026 and will cost 300 yen or about $2. No plans for a worldwide release of the charms have been announced yet, but for Zelda fans in Japan, they should make neat collector’s items. The charms feature Link as he appears in the various games that are represented (minus the Echoes of Wisdom charm, which features Zelda), so fans can get a fresh look at the beloved hero as he appeared in Twilight Princess.
It’s safe to say that most Zelda fans aren’t going to be terribly excited about this new Twilight Princess release, and would much rather see the actual video game made playable on Switch. Unfortunately, no plans to that effect have been announced at the time of this writing. Leaks from reputable sources have insisted that Nintendo has both Twilight Princess HD and The Wind Waker HD ready to go for Switch, but for one reason or another, the company has never pulled the trigger.
At this point, it’s hard to blame fans if they’ve given up hope of ever seeing Twilight Princess HD on the Switch. However, there’s still hope that the original game could be made playable on Switch 2 at least. Switch 2’s Nintendo Classics library includes GameCube games, with the original version of The Wind Waker already available. It’s possible that Twilight Princess could eventually come to the Nintendo Classics library as well, and that may very well be the best chance that we have of seeing the game made playable on modern hardware.
While Twilight Princess fans wait for news on an eventual Switch port or Switch 2 re-release, they can look forward to other Zelda releases dropping in October. The Zelda-themed Switch 2 console is releasing on October 29 alongside a slew of accessories. And then, on November 5, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is releasing to the masses. So while Twilight Princess representation is just a historical charm, at least there’s still plenty of more substantial Zelda releases to check out in the near future.
