- The next Metro game may be a VR title called Metro Awakening, which could be revealed at the PlayStation State of Play showcase.
- The rumored VR game might be a single-player experience and potentially exclusive to the PS VR2 platform.
- There are conflicting reports about multiplayer, and there’s still hope that a non-VR version of the game will be available for fans who do not own VR devices.
Details about the next game in the highly popular Metro franchise may have leaked online, though if the info is reliable, it will be a VR title, much to the disappointment of many fans. Based on the novels by Russian writer Dmitry Glukhovsky, the Metro series of games first appeared in 2010 and quickly gained a dedicated following. A second title was released three years later, and fans had to wait another six years for the most recent game, Metro Exodus.
As it’s been almost five years since the launch of Metro Exodus, fans of the series have been getting antsy for news about a potential follow-up. The PlayStation State of Play is expected to take place sometime at the end of January, and there have been rumors that the long-awaited new Metro game will be revealed then. However, as happens so often these days, details about the next entry in the series may have leaked early.
Metro Series Writer Sentenced to Prison
Dmitry Glukhovsky, writer of the Metro series that inspired the games of the same name has been sentenced to eight years in prison by a Moscow Court.
Unfortunately for some and to the joy of others, the next Metro game may be a VR release called Metro Awakening, according to known leaker Kurakasis. It will also, says Insider Gaming, be a single-player experience. And since it’s rumored that it will be revealed at the PlayStation State of Play, it might be a PS VR2 exclusive as well. However, in 2020, developer 4A Games announced that the next Metro game was being created for “Gen 9 consoles and PC,” though that plan may have of course changed. It was also mentioned in the same post that the new entry would feature multiplayer, something that has not been offered in previous Metro games.
The possible announcement of the next Metro game at the January PlayStation State of Play showcase would coincide with another rumor that dates back to February 2023. At that time, Spanish YouTuber eXtas1stv cited insider information that the next Metro game was planned for release sometime in 2024, and Insider Gaming revealed that it was already in a fully playable state.
What’s Rumored About the Next Metro Game?
- Title: Metro Awakening
- Platform: PS VR2
- Release: 2024
- Single and possibly multiplayer
The Metro universe with its immersive post-apocalyptic setting and mutated monsters would be ideal for a virtual reality game, but that would also leave a huge portion of the fan base out in the cold. There is always the possibility that a non-VR game is also in the works, or that Metro Awakening will have both VR and standard versions available at some point.
The Metro games have thus far always been sequels, following the somewhat linear story of protagonist Artyom, whose primary goal is to safeguard the inhabitants of the Moscow metro and eventually find them a safe home outside. It would doubtless be disappointing for many fans of the franchise if the next chapter of the Metro story were released in a format that only a select few could play, though like Valve’s Half-Life Alyx, it wouldn’t be the first time a developer did just that.
