A surprise Nintendo Direct has unexpectedly premiered on October 31, quietly appearing on YouTube with minimal prior notice. Nintendo’s latest presentation runs for just over nine and a half minutes and is entirely focused on the Pikmin franchise.

The Japanese gaming giant has already devoted significant airtime to Pikmin this year. Pikmin 4: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy was announced during the September 2026 Nintendo Direct, complete with a November 12 release date. The October 31 showcase reiterated that launch timing, but while revealing plenty of other initiatives based on the long-running series.

Nintendo’s Surprise Direct Establishes November 1 as Pikmin Day

The roughly nine-minute Pikmin Day Direct appeared on Nintendo’s YouTube channel(s) at 7:00 a.m. PT on October 31 rather than streamed live, following an announcement made only shortly beforehand. Nintendo Representative Director Shigeru Miyamoto opened the presentation by explaining that the company is officially designating November 1 as “Pikmin Day” beginning in 2026. The date was chosen because the franchise’s original Red, Blue, and Yellow Pikmin standing together resemble the three 1s in “11/1.”

Everything New Announced for 2026 Pikmin Day Nintendo Direct

  • Free Pikmin 4 Switch 2 demo, launching November 2
  • Pikmin Bloom Secret Caves, coming winter 2026
  • Hello! Pikmin short film series, debuting October 31
  • November 1 is now officially designated as Pikmin Day
  • Nintendo Treehouse Plays: Pikmin 4 stream set for November 1 at 9 a.m. PT

No new game was announced during the October 31 presentation. Instead, much of the Direct focused on Pikmin 4: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy. Nintendo revealed that a free demo of the upcoming title will launch on November 2, giving players access to the opening Sunspeckled Terrace area and two Dandori Academy stages. As has become customary with the company’s demos, all progress will transfer to the full release. The definitive edition of Pikmin 4 launches November 12. It will retail for $69.99, while existing owners of the Switch 1 version can purchase a $9.99 Upgrade Pack. The former price is only for the physical release, while the eShop pricing has not been published yet. Looking at recent history, it’s possible that the game will be $10 cheaper digitally.

Dandori Academy expands on a concept already central to the fourth mainline entry, which introduced Pikmin 4 multiplayer Dandori Battles. The Switch 2 version also takes advantage of the console’s distinctive hardware, allowing players to use its built-in microphone to issue voice commands to Oatchi. Dandori Academy also introduces challenges centered on gathering treasures in a maximally efficient manner.

Nintendo used its first-ever Pikmin Day Direct to announce plans beyond the Switch 2. Niantic’s augmented reality game Pikmin Bloom is getting a Secret Caves feature in winter 2026, allowing players to obtain cave maps and send Pikmin underground in search of treasure. Some expeditions will also involve encounters with creatures that players must defeat, adding a more combat-oriented component to the mobile game’s existing, largely exploration-focused loop. The October 31 showcase also included the reveal of Hello! Pikmin, a new series of animated shorts produced in collaboration with Nintendo Pictures, formerly known as Dynamo Pictures before Nintendo acquired the company in 2022. The first short debuted during the 2026 Pikmin Day Direct, with another scheduled for November 1 and a third planned for later in the month.
