A brand-new Nintendo Switch Online update has just been released, adding a total of three new Game Boy games to the Classics library. These three Switch Online Game Boy games, Avenging Spirit, Mole Mania, and Pinball: Revenge of the ‘Gator, were all originally released in the 1990s.
The Nintendo Switch Online Classics library has grown significantly since its launch in September 2018. What began as a rather small but respectable collection of 20 Nintendo Entertainment System games has turned into an expansive service that offers SNES, Game Boy, and Game Boy Color games, and for an additional fee, Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, GameCube, and Virtual Boy titles.
Nintendo Switch Online Adds 3 More Game Boy Games
- Avenging Spirit
- Mole Mania
- Pinball: Revenge of the ‘Gator
The Nintendo Switch Online Classics library goes from 392 games to 395 today as three more Game Boy titles join the service. The first of these is Avenging Spirit. Originally released in Japan in May 1991 under the name Phantasm, Avenging Spirit came to the US just five months later, arriving as an arcade game first. Avenging Spirit then received a Game Boy port in late 1992. Avenging Spirit is an action platformer that sees players controlling a ghost who’s on a quest to save his living girlfriend from the sinister crime syndicate that gunned him down. As a ghost, players can possess four playable characters, each one equipped with unique abilities.
Mole Mania has a much more family-friendly premise. Developed and published by Nintendo specifically for the Game Boy, Mole Mania is a 1996/1997 puzzle game that sees players assume the role of Muddy, a mole who must move a black ball to the end of the stage, denoted by moving on to the next screen of the game. While the premise of Mole Mania is relatively simple, its gameplay can get quite complex, with players needing to dig holes in specific spots in order to access hidden underground pathways, but avoid dropping the ball into holes that would restart their progress.
The third and final game added to Nintendo Switch Online today is Pinball: Revenge of the ‘Gator. Known simply as Revenge of the ‘Gator in the US, this pinball game arrived in North America and Europe in March 1990. The goal of Revenge of the ‘Gator is simple, players just need to launch a ball and keep it in play via a pair of flippers, just like a standard game of pinball. But they do need to avoid their ball getting eaten by the titular vengeful reptile.
With these three new additions, the Nintendo Switch Online Game Boy library is just one game away from having 50 titles available on its North American service. While the overall count is technically 51, a handful of Switch Online Game Boy games are only available in Japan, such as the Game Boy Color version of Balloon Kid and the mahjong game Yakuman.
