The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a remake of a beloved game originally released on N64, and one retailer is offering an incentive that calls back to those roots. Originally released in 1998, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time quickly gained a reputation as one of the greatest video games ever made.
Announced earlier this year, Zelda: Ocarina of Time comes to Switch 2 on November 5. Nintendo seems to be pulling out all the stops for the release, treating it as a potential system seller. A special edition Switch 2 console is being offered, as well a Pro Controller and two amiibo based on Young Link and Young Zelda. There’s clearly a lot of nostalgia for the original game, and this could be a huge release just over a year into Switch 2’s lifespan.

Pre-orders for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake have opened at various retailers, and EB Games Canada has an exclusive incentive for its customers. People that buy the game from the retailer will receive a holographic slipcover, which is designed to resemble the original N64 box. For those that haven’t pre-ordered the game from a retailer yet, it seems like a nice incentive, but it appears this is exclusive to Canada. That means fans in other regions are out of luck.

The N64 version of Ocarina is playable through Nintendo Switch Online, but the Switch 2 version makes many dramatic improvements. The game’s graphics and performance have been overhauled, and the developers are taking advantage of the Switch 2 hardware in various ways. Players can expect motion-controlled aiming while using items like the Slingshot, the ability to use the microphone in conjunction with the in-game Ocarina, and the implementation of the Zelda Notes feature from the Nintendo Switch mobile app.

Given the excitement surrounding the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, most fans probably won’t consider missing out on this pre-order bonus to be a deal-breaker. At the end of the day, it’s just a cardboard slipcover, and it’s not unusual for other regions to receive exclusive extras, like the SteelBook for the Switch remake of Zelda: Link’s Awakening that never came to North America. Still, it’s a neat extra, and it’s certain to make some fans from the N64 era jealous.
It remains to be seen whether the remake of Zelda: Ocarina of Time will receive the same level of success as the N64 version. Taking a classic game and polishing it up to modern standards can alienate fans of the original, while remaining too faithful can frustrate newcomers. Nintendo finally showed gameplay footage of Zelda: Ocarina of Time after months of silence, and reception seems to be very positive at the moment. With the game’s release date swiftly approaching, fans won’t have to wait long to experience the highly-anticipated remake for themselves.
