After the success of Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man franchise, fans have high hopes for Marvel’s Wolverine from the same developer. The game has lots of material to pull from for its story, as Logan and the rest of the X-Men have decades of soap opera-like plotlines. While Wolverine’s most popular drama comes from his love triangle with Jean Grey and Cyclops, it’s been explored countless times. If Marvel’s Wolverine wants to explore a fresher and more interesting relationship, it should take cues from the acclaimed X-Men ‘97.

Insomniac Games officially announced Marvel’s Wolverine in September 2021, with some creative directors and writers from Spider-Man: Miles Morales joining its development team. Its trailer and official website don’t provide much information, except that the game will have a confirmed release on the PS5. Meanwhile, X-Men 97 premiered this year to great reviews, as its art style and story arcs stayed true and even surpassed the quality of the original series. It also improved a relationship that Logan had with a teammate other than Jean Grey, which stirred up a lot of speculation online.

Marvel’s Wolverine Shouldn’t Be Afraid to Show a Different Side of Logan

Last year’s Insomniac leaks suggest a major narrative opportunity for Marvel’s Wolverine, which should be capitalized on to flesh out Logan.

Logan and Morph’s Relationship is Worth Exploring in Marvel’s Wolverine

While Wolverine takes a backseat in X-Men 97 in favor of putting the spotlight on characters like Cyclops and Magneto, he has some shining moments in the show. These include his interactions with another veteran of the team: the X-Men’s Morph.

Morph’s Role in the X-Men

Morph can change his appearance to look like any organic being. He usually morphs into other mutants and superheroes during battle, as he can also mimic their abilities. This hero has seen his fair share of troubles, most notably with Mister Sinister, who once brainwashed them into fighting the X-Men. He eventually returned to the team and became part of the main cast in X-Men 97. His closest relationship is with Logan, which was expanded further in the latest show.

Wolverine and Morph’s Relationship in X-Men 97

Morph was always close with Logan in the original animated series. However, some fans noticed that he was more intimate with Wolverine in X-Men 97. Some of their lines and actions early in the show suggested that he had strong feelings for Logan. Such emotions were made more obvious in X-Men 97 episode 9 – Tolerance is Extinction: Part 2.

While watching and guarding Logan, who is in critical condition, he changes into Jean to hopefully encourage Logan to pull through and survive his grievous wounds once more. In this form, he also told Wolverine “I love you Logan, stay with me.” Fans speculated whether this was just to strengthen Wolverine’s will to live or a heartfelt confession of love from Morph. Former showrunner Beau DeMayo confirmed that it was the latter, to the delight of many fans.

Why Logan and Morph’s Relationship is Perfect for Marvel’s Wolverine

Morph’s unrequited love for Logan is worth exploring in Marvel’s Wolverine because it feels so authentic. They started as close friends in the original animated series, and their relationship grew throughout the show until Morph eventually showed his interest in Logan in more obvious ways. This romantic story would be interesting to see in a format like Marvel’s Wolverine’s cutscenes.

Morph would be the perfect foil to Wolverine, too. His quick wit and positive attitude offer a great contrast to a curmudgeon like Logan. His presence in the game could be a great alternative to a Deadpool cameo, which can upstage Wolverine in his own game. Having Morph in the game could potentially lead to cool combat combos. He could even turn into different mutants like Gambit, Nightcrawler, or Angel to boost Wolverine’s attacks.
